A brief Biography of Robert Joseph Henneberg, by Barbara Henneberg.


Robert Joseph Henneberg
Bobby was born at Letterman General Hospital, Presidio of San Francisco
on 27 February 1947. He was the son of Robert Edward Henneberg and Bernice Ann Henneberg.

He was the brother of Barbara and William Henneberg, and uncle of Roberta Henneberg.

In January 1948 with his mother and sister traveled to meet his father in Japan.

His father was a career Army man of 22 years and retired in 1958.

In 1954 the Henneberg family was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. In 1955 his brother Billy was born.

In 1957, the Henneberg family returned to the U.S. (Arizona), and finally in 1958 returned to San Francisco.

Bobby attended Woodrow Wilson High School. Played football and upon graduation in 1965 was presented

with a scholarship to attend the University of California at Davis.

He had high hopes of becoming a Forest Ranger.

While still in high school, Bobby had joined the Marine Corps Reserves. Feeling he wanted to fulfill his

military obligation he put his college studies on hold. And on 16 August 1965 he went on active duty.

After bootcamp at San Diego and Advanced Infantry at Camp Pendleton, he came home to San Francisco for

Christmas of 1965. And shortly after was sent to Vietnam.  

First he was with the 3rd Marine Division, then the 1st Marine Division.

Bobby celebrated his 19th birthday at Chu Lai, South Vietnam. On 27 July 1966 at 0942 hours he as killed in

action on Operation Franklin I. He was buried at Golden Gate National Cemetery on 16 August 1966.

Yes he was buried on his Marine Corps birthday. He had hoped to be on R & R this day.

The morning we buried him, on the radio I heard "I Left My Heart In San Francisco".

He had written to me "I can't wait to hear 'I Left My Heart In San Francisco' when I get home."
