Stripping Old Paint
How to strip old minis
By H.T. Golden
So you scored that great deal on eBay and the old minis have arrived. You know that they're painted and that you'll have to redo them...but how do you get the old paint off? If the minis are 1980s vintage there is a good chance that they're painted with Testor Model Arcylis or the like, and the stuff is on there thick.
You could just undercoat them and paint over it, but you loose even more detail than is already covered up by the old paint. Even if the old paint isn't on there too thick it is still a good idea to strip the mini down to bare metal and start over.
Stripping minis down to bare metal can be quite the ordeal...but today I discovered the most incredible product at the hardware store!
It's call "5f5" and is produced by Sterling. It is $8.99 for a quart. The can is blue and white and it says "5f5 non-flamable paint and varnish remover." The stuff is mild compared to other strippers and removers. It does not damage the soft metal minis in anyway.
To use the stuff i put the minis in a coffee can and poured the goop over them. "5f5" is thick like a jell but it still pours. As it reacts with the paint it becomes more like liquid. Let sit 30 minutes and aggitate the can every now and again. Then take your sisters tooth brush and scrub the minis off under running water. The paint comes off in sheets and out of every nook and cranny on the mini. It's amazing. The minis will look like you just tookit out of a blister pack!
Lastly, wash the minis off with regular rubbing alcohol to remove any residue from the "5f5" as it will cause the primer to peel.
