Smith Deen was born in North Carolina, June 2,1793, a son of Nathan
Dean (Deen). He was married twice but the name of his first wife
does not appear in the old Lynn Family Bible whic contains records
of Smith Deen's Children. The second wife Nancy, was born April 2,1808
but her maiden name is not known. The names of the children as
recorded in the old record does not show by which wife any of them
were born.
Smith Deen and family were among the first settlers of Appling
County, being shown there in the 1820 census-- the first census
of the county following its creation in 1818 from Indian territory.
He died there October 15, 1869. Death of his wife Nancy is not shown inthe old record, but was in the 1880s. Descendants say the family movedto Appling County from Robeson County, N.C., but this has not beenverified. The first two children were born in North Carolina; all theothers in Appling County.
