Joseph Fletcher, a son of Joseph Fletcher and grandson of WilliamFletcher, R.S., was born in South Carolina in 1784, and moved with hisparents to Effingham County the same year. The family was cut intoBulloch County in 1796 and he grew up there. About 1810-12 he came withothers of his family to Telfair County, and was married there Jan. 28,1813, to Miss Mary Hendley, born July 11, 1797 in Bulloch county,daughter of William Hendley, R.S. The Hendley family moved from Bullochto Telfair about the same time the Fletchers did, and settled in theportion now in Dodge County. To Joseph and Mary had fourteen children.
The Fourteen children constitute the base of the large Fletcherfamily connection in Irwin, and adjoining counties of today.
Joseph Fletcher united with the Primitive Baptist Church at Young'sMeeting-house, known as Brushy Creek Church. He wnited by "recantation"Sept. 13 1843, but was expelled August 23, 1845. His wife was baptizedinto the Membership June 29, 1840, and apparently died a member.
Joseph Fletcher and wife were among the first settlers of Irwincounty, moving there about 1825 from Telfair, They first settled on lotof land No. 8. 6th district Irwin County, where they lived for someyears, later moving to the 3rd District, where he died Dec. 6, 1874. Mr.Fletcher died July 12, 1872.
