Appling County, Georgia.

Joel Gornto, a son of Nathan and Easter (Burnett) Gornto, was bornin Bulloch County, Novenber 7, 1806. His parents moved while he was asmall Boy, to Laurens County, moved to Lowndes County (territory nowBrooks) and soon after, Joel Gornto married Mary Blair, daughter ofWillian and Mary (Joyce) Blair. Both of her grandfather wereRevolutionary War veteran. She was born Dec. 29 1810, in Screven County,and died March 10, 1889, at her home in Brooks County. Joel and Mary Hadeight children.
Joel Gornto was 2nd Lieutenant of the militia in the 664th district,1832-1837. He and his wife were faithful members of the Methodist Churchand had their membership in Mount Zion Church near Moven. Joel Gorntodied of small-pox October 22, 1860, being one of the victims in the firstappearance in Brooks County, of the disease. Both Mr. Gornto and hiswife are buried at Mount Zion Camp-Ground or church.
