William Stacy Bailey was born March 5, 1818, in Woolwich, Maine, ason of Abner and Mehala (Marshall) Bailey. He came south and went toMontgomery County, Georgia, where a very big sawmill (water-power)business was being carried on near the present village of Lumber City bythe Georgia Lumber Company, owned by sawmill men from Maine andMassachusetts; and worked for that company some years. Mr. Baileymarried Miss Mary Elizabeth Pittman in Montgomery county, Aug. 19 1847;she was born July 2, 1831 in that county. She died Aug. 4, 1886, inWaycross. They had seven children.
Mr bailey came to Ware County in 1855 and bought some of the wildlands covered with original stands of pine timber, some of which is nowembraced in the city limits of Waycross. His abject in moving to Warewas to engage in timber business and the lands he acquired were on ornear the Satilla River; the huge logs were rafted down the river to thecoast for shipping. Later he engaged in the sawmill business. first byhimself and later in partnership with his son, James S,. and Capt, C.W.Hilliard, in the early 1870s. The building through Ware County of thefirst railroad in 1858-59 from Savannah to Thomasville, followed twoyears later by the extension of the railroad from Brunswick to Wareboro(and later in the 1870s to Albany), the two roads crossing where Waycrossnow is, made of townsite inevitable, and first, "Tebeauville" came intoexistance and then it was merged into "Waycross"in the 1870s Mr. Baileyalong with Dr. Daniel Lott and Capt Hilliard and Dr. B.F. Williams ownedmost of the land on which the town.
Mr. Bailey served on the Ware County Board of Education 1872-1880,and was County Treasurer from 1879 until 1891. He was a member ofWaresbors Lodge, No. 217, F.& A.M., for some years, later of WaycrossLodge, No. 305. He and his wife were members of the Methodist Church inWaycross. He died Sept. 24, 1894, and was buried by his wife in the LottCemetery in Waycross.
