"Barnwell County, S.C., deed records show James Joyce bought severaltracts there from William Thomas in 1786 and 1787, same being on or nearBriar Creek, waters of Savannah River (Book A of deeds, pp. 152-3-4). Adeed is of record in Tattnall County from him to his son, William, Jan.6, 1816, for 100 acres lying between the Broad and Saluda Rivers in SouthCarolina, being the land he bought Jan. 2, 1786, from Jacob Warnell (BookABCD, page 188). In Screven County, GA, is a deed from him and his wife,Sabra, to Asa Tanner dated Dec. 6, 1796, for 100 acres bought for himfrom John Joyce Nov. 22, 1794 (Deed book A, pages 191 and 249). 450 acresnear the Altamaha River in Tattnall were surveyed for him Aug. 10, 1806;it became known as the "White Bluff Tract" and was the home place of Mr.Joyce, and was owned by him at his death. He also granted 550 acres onthe Oconee River, which he owned at his death, and also other tracts. Thedeeds give a good idea of the places of residence and of removal from onecounty and state to another. James Joyce died in Tattnall County in 1817,and left a will dated July 22, 1814, and same was probated April 1817.His estate was divided between his wife, Sabra, and daughters above namedand son, William. The son, William, became administrator c. t. a. Mrs.Joyce succeeded him as administratrix in February, 1820. After her death,William again became the administrator c. t. a. (with will annexed)."

James Kemp was born Aug. 18,1791, in South Carolina. He and hisbrothers, Peter and Joshua Kemp, were early residents of Tattnall County
moving there about 1810. James Kemp was married Dec. 28, 1813, to FloraHall, daughter of Lewis Hall, R.S. (Vol I). They had six children allborn in Tattnall County.
James Kemp served as Justice of peace in the 42nd district, TattnallCounty, 1820-21. He was Sheriff of his county, 1821 until his death.
His holdings were located in the southern part of the county on theAltamaha River. He died at his home there Jan. 18, 1826. In December,1826, his widow married William Jones and he immediately applied Dec. 15,1826, for administration on the James Kemp estate Oct, 15, 1827, MosesSmith also applied for administration on the estate and was appointed.The latter was a merchant and a neighbor.
The widow, Mrs. Flora Kemp-Jones died Oct. 15, 1828, and her deathleft the children without either father or mother. They were taken incharge by their uncles in Appling county, and reared to maturity.
The son, Peter Kemp, enlisted Sept. 10, 1861 in co "I", 27thVolunteer Georgia Infantry, C.S.A. and died of typhoid fever inChimboraze Hospital No. 4, Richmond, Va., August 1, 1862, according tothe company roll. The son, Of Joshua Kemp, with his wife Jane and theirchildren are shown in Coffee county in the 1860 and 1870 censuses. Heand his brother Peter were both listed as carpenters in the 1860 Census;Peter was living at that time in the home of Alfred S. Hall, A cousin, inAppling county.
