Samuel Lightsey was born in Colleton District, S. C. in 1806. Withhis brother, Jacob, the tow families moved to Lowmdes County, Georgia, in1836. Samuel's first wife, Martha M., was born in 1814 in S.C. Hermaiden name has not been learned. She died about 1858, and some fewyears later he married Mrs. Rachel Howell, Widow of William Howell ofEchols County. She was born May 1, 1816, S. C., and died Oct. 2, 1892.Samuel Lightsey's Children were born by his first wife, they had eleven.
Samuel Lightsey was in the Indian War and served in Capt. JesseCarter's company of Lowndes County Militia in July 1st to Aug. 15, 1838;
and in Capt. David R. Bryan's company of Lowndes County Militia, fromAug. 15, to Oct. 15, 1838.
His home was on the west side of the Alapaha River near presentHowell Station. Mr. Lightsey was a member of Macedonia Baptist Churchfor many years as was also both of his wives. He died in September.1878, and was buried in the cemetery at Macedonia Church where his firstwife had been buried and where his second wife was later buried.
He was a member of Alapaha Lodge, No. 209, F.&A.M., at Statenville,and died a member.
