The Byrd family from which Sarah descended was residing in Bute County,North Carolina in 1778. (The area that was Bute County, N.C. is nowcontained in Franklin and Warren Counties, N.C. -- CEH) On October 14,1778, John Byrd, Sr. made his Will in Bute County. In his Will he namedhis wife Mary, many daughters, several grandchildren, and sons Jesse,Enos, Needham, and John.
Jesse Byrd, Sarah's ancestor, appears on the 1790 Federal Census ofFranklin County, North Carolina, Halifax District. His family consistedof two white males over sixteen years, two white males under sixteenyears, six white females, and eight slaves. Jesse Byrd also listed themembers of the household of Needham Byrd "deceased" - two white malesover 16, five white females, and eight slaves.
The 1797 Tax Digest of Montogomery County, Georgia lists Jesse Byrd, Sr.,400 acres pineland in Montgomery. The 1798 Tax Digest of that countylists Jesse Byrd, Sr., 400 acres pineland in Montgomery County, 200 acresin Burke County, and 188 acres in Screven County, and Jesse Byrd, Jr. waslisted with 100 acres pineland in Montgomery County.
Jesse Byrd, Jr. mentioned above was the father of Sarah Byrd. He wasliving in the part of Montgomery County that was made Tatnall County in1801. The first records of Tatnall County showing his name are dated1805. He operated a ferry known as Mann's Ferry across the Alatmaha Riverin Tatnall County. Only two children may be positively attributed toJesse Byrd, Jr. They are Sarah . . . and Elizabeth. . . . Jesse Byrd, Jr.was obviously married, but the name of his spouse is not known. Sarah came to Lowndes County with her husband Henry and daughter Susannain 1828. She survived her husband in 1858. During her 76th year shedeeded all her lands to her children Susanna Hightower Newbern and ByrdHightower. Ten years later in 1878 she died while still living in thecabin built when she and her husband first came to Lowndes County. Shewas buried in the Hightower Family Cemetery.
