Perspectives On Romance

by Bob Narindra
It is a well known fact that one of the most important aspects of a relationship is romance. In fact, I would go so far as to say that any relationship that does not contain romance is doomed to failure. Why? Because, regardless of what anyone says, both men and women fantasize about romance. Both would love to be swept off their feet by their partner and, if it is not happening, then they wonder what is missing in their relationship. So, how does one become romantic? Well, a good place to start would be to find out what romance actually is.
Well, when I started researching this article, I thought that the best place to look to find a definition of the word romance, would be a dictionary. Boy was I wrong! There was not one single definition in any dictionary that I looked at that correctly defined romance between lovers! Webster's, for example, has four definitions of romance:
A species of fictitious writing.
An adventure, or series of extraordinary events, resembling those narrated in romances.
A dreamy, imaginative habit of mind; a disposition to ignore what is real.
The languages, or rather the several dialects, which were originally forms of popular or vulgar Latin.
Now, out of these four, the closest one is number 2, but it still doesn't really explain what romance is. Essentially it tells you to go and read a bunch of romance novels and find out for yourself!
So, essentially, we are still without a definition for romance! At this point I came to the conclusion that I was not going to find what I was looking for through normal channels so I decided to look inward and develop a definition of romance that encompasses and sums up everything that romance is when applied to couples. What I came up with was in-fact incredibly simple:
Romance: The act of making your partner feel loved.
Now, this may not seem like much of a definition but it actually completely and accurately defines what romance is - making your partner feel loved! It doesn't matter what you do as long as it makes them feel special and loved by you. You don't need money, an expensive restaurant or a chauffeured limousine ride to be romantic (although I am sure your partner wouldn't complain). It doesn't even take a lot of time or planning, it can consist of something as simple as a heartfelt kiss or a hug. What you do doesn't even have to be perfect (especially if you're trying to write them a love poem). The important thing is the feeling and thought you put behind it and conveying those feelings and thoughts to your partner. Whatever you do, (and there are tons of ideas on this site to help you) make sure it comes from the heart. Leave your partner with no doubts at all that they are the most loved person in the world! As easy as it may sound, that is all it takes to being a romantic. Try it tonight and find out for yourself!
