Icons and Frescoes in Cyprus

Still under construction but plenty here

The Virgin holds the leading position among the Saints of Heaven and also personifies the Church, having contained, like the Church, Christ Himself.

Hodegetria

The Virgin as a conductress of prayer

This is the only icon we have found featuring

Panayia Astadhion Church

Platytera

from the Greek Platytera ton ouranon
She prays in early Christian style in the orans position with arms extended wide.
The term "Platytera" is taken from one of the hymns of the Church, which refers to the womb of Mary as wider than the heavens because she gave birth to the Son and Word of God, Who is infinite and eternal, yet entered time and human history as a man (John 1:1-14).

Panakranta

The Virgin as the Queen of Heaven

The paintings below are examples of the Mother of Christ regally enthroned holding Him at the centre of her being

She portrays compassion rather than glory as she sits enthroned

Kiti

If you look carefully at the icons at the right and left of the entrance to the  sanctuary depicting Ayios Charalambous and Ayios Savvas, you might notice what appears  to be an artist's error in that they each have five fingers and a thumb on one hand.
