Ayios Yeoryios

The legend about the dragon was very popular amongst the crusaders.

At this time there was a terrible dragon in Libya who ate a virgin, chosen by lot, every day. The turn came to the king's daughter, and Ayios Yeoryios defeated the monster and dragged it into town by the princess's girdle. He then killed it and had five oxen drag it into the sea.

There are more that sixty churches dedicated to Ayios Yeoryios in Cyprus

In art, Ayios Yeoryios is depicted as a young warrior often mounted on a white horse and slaying a dragon. His shield and lance pennant are a red cross on a white background.  Generally there is a princess near him, and often there is a young slave boy as a saddle companion

Ayios Dimitrios

Ayios Dimitrios, the Great Martyr and Myrovletes (myrrh-emitting), was born in Thessalonica 3C

In art, Ayios Dimitrios is depicted as a warrior, often on a red horse, slaying a soldier

The Forty Martyrs of Sebasteia

Orthodox Name Day is  March 9

A garrison of 40 Roman soldiers were stationed in this remote Armenian town during 4C

While they were bold, courageous soldiers, they were also devout Christians. Upon hearing of this in Rome, the infuriated Emperor issued an edict, stating that those throughout the Empire who would not worship pagan gods would be tortured and put to death.

An additional contingent of soldiers was sent to Sebasteia to see exactly where the loyalties of these 40 Christians actually stood.

It was bitterly cold in Sebasteia at that time of the year, and these soldiers were forced to remove their clothes and stand in the middle of a frozen lake, looking across the waters at the glowing fires heating the baths where they could go if they would renounce their faith

One of the forty drifted away and fled to the bath; and as he touched to the warmth, straightaway he melted. And so he gave up his soul

As death approached, a band of angels came down from heaven and placed crowns on the heads of these dying Saints. It is said that one of the Roman guards was so moved by this sight that he removed his own garments and rushed to die himself at the side of these Christian warriors.

The connection with Cyprus, according to one legend is that, once the group became forty again, they came out of the lake and travelled to Cyprus through Turkey

In art, the 40 martyrs of Sebasteia are depicted in undergarments, shoulders drawn up and arms held to protect their bodies from the cold. Martyr's crowns are suspended above their heads.

put me to the sword - I shall remember the honoured Forerunner. For me, to die is life in Christ."
