bullet Elijah Covington WARD was born on 16 May 1832 in Jackson Co., MS. He died on 6 May 1921 in Jackson Co., FL. Elijah may be the same as Liza, a census mistake, according to Bob Doherty. In 1840 there are two females age 0-5; in 1850 there should not be any females over age 15. Liza, age 18, does not "fit"; there are two females age 11 & 15. Could Lige or Liga have been misinterpreted as Liza? Elijah reared by Griffin Hollman, a lawyer, after his mother's death. Found in the 1850 Census of Perry Co., MS with HOLLMAN. Buried at Cypress Baptist Cemetery.

Elijah Covington WARD was borned in Jackson County Miss. Then he was married a second time, Jan-6-1897, to Missouri Davis McCARTY, 2 children were borned, Elvira Elizabeth, Pauline Adella, he lived in Jackson Co Fla from 1894 till death May-6-1921. bullet Elijah W. WARD was born in 1779 in Ashland, Caswell County, North Carolina. He died in 1862 in Walton County, Florida. According to several sources he is the son of John III. There is a letter written by Joseph Bartholomew Childress stating the relationship. There is also a story related by Jesse Turner to Betty Perkins: William Childress, the son of Nancy & Bartholomew, went to see his Uncle Elijah and met Mary Caroline his first cousin. He fell in love and when he went back he took two friends, George Washington Nelson & Marsh Underwood and introduced them to Mary's sisters, Harriett & Louisa; they all got married. Jesse was a desc. of Gabriella. I do not know Elijah & son James' connection to NC! He is found in Clark Co., AL, in 1816, son James b. in NC ca 1820, in what became Walton Co., FL in 1821, in Covington Co., AL in 1830, Tallahassee, Leon Co., FL in 1835, & back in Walton Co. in the 1840 census. He is also found there in 1850 & 1860. Fought in the Indian Wars of 1837 & 1838 for which he received a bounty of 160 acres in Walton Co., FL. This appears to be the land described on homestead certificate #8210. Filed for & received 640 acres in what became Santa Rosa Co., FL on the Yellow River; known as Ward's Basin. Claims he settled there in 1821 & cultivated the land. Elijah was a cobbler who was once said to have fought off a pack of wild dogs with his cobbler's awl. Most of the WARDs in the area were loggers. All of course were farmers to some degree. Elijah, according to family lore, married twice after after Sarah died. One wife was taken across the river in a boat and left on the other side. He is buried in what is now a meadow near Crestview.

bullet Eliza Ruth WARD was born on 18 Sep 1912 in Pulaski, Virginia. Strawberry Time In The Hollow

Written by
Jim Nixon

The wild strawberry plants had bloomed much earlier in the year, the warm spring, and gentle rains had been just what the plants needed to produce a bountiful harvest, and now the berries were ripening and ready for picking. The sweet berries were a prized commodity of the inhabitants of the hill country of the
western part of Virginia, and picking them was a daily chore. Earlier in the year when the strawberry plants were beginning to bloom, Emory Nixon a young man of twenty five years of age had met the girl of his dreams, Eliza Ward, a young lady, fifteen years old and ten years younger than himself. Just as the strawberry plants had bloomed, so too had the love that they had for each other. Emory would do any thing to be with Eliza, and judging by what was to take place one would have to assume that the feeling was mutual.

The story begins the evening before when Emory, who had been visiting with Eliza, had told her that he was going to work on his mothers car at home the next day, and if she wanted to come over and visit him, that would be a good time. Now back then, it just was not very lady like for a young girl to go gallivanting off to a boys house, and Mary Ward, Eliza's Mother, had already warned her not to go over to the Nixon's house to see Emory. Now, any one who ever thought that they were in love knows that a team of wild horses couldn't keep two lovers apart, and immediately Eliza begin to plan just how she was going to out smart her mother and make the journey over two hills and a hollow to see the man of her dreams.

Now back to the strawberries, there just ain't nothing that can beat a bowl of wild strawberries covered with sugar and cream, unless it might possibly be homemade strawberry preserves. Eliza knew that her mother wanted some berries, and so therein lies her plan. Early that morning she grabs a half gallon bucket and sneaks out of the house and goes out scouring the hillsides for the small sweet berries and after having picked a goodly portion she hides them in the bushes, for they are a part of the plan that she has masterminded to outwit her mother so that she can go visit with Emory. Eliza returns to the house to await her opportunity to put into play the rest of her plan. So far everything has went well, she has picked the berries, hid them, and returned to the house, all without being missed by her mother.

Mrs. Wards favorite spot was sitting in the doorway of the old log home that her husband Charles had purchased some years earlier, and today was no exception, there she was holding Sadie, her youngest child, putting her to sleep and watching down the road that leads up into the hollow. Eliza had already cleaned up from her berry picking trip and was just waiting for the opportunity to slip away from the house and to go see Emory. Mrs. Ward noticed that Eliza was all dressed up and remarked, "I guess he's a coming over" and Eliza replied, yes, at about two. Sadie was asleep by now and Mrs. Ward got up to lay her into the bed and no sooner than she had cleared the doorway, Eliza ran from the house, down the road, up the hills and hollow to the Nixon home place where Emory was working on his mothers car.

Mrs. Martha Nixon was working in her vegetable garden, nursing along the tender plants that provided the food for her family's table. Lucy, Emory's sister was nearby picking strawberries, and just as planned he was working on his mothers car. Eliza had arrived about five minutes earlier and had few precious moments to socialize with Emory when he looked over to where his mother was working and noticed that Mrs. Ward had arrived on the scene. Oh!! Eliza, he remarked; I see your mother coming, go over to where Lucy is picking berries and maybe she won't whip you. Well, that didn't help, holding a switch in her hand she remarked, " I thought I told you not to come over here", at the same time striking Eliza across the legs with the switch. Moving rather rapidly ahead of her mother down the hill and toward home she remembered to stop and pick up the berries that she had hidden earlier that day, "you picked them this morning, didn't you", her mother remarked, telling the truth, as had always been her policy, she exclaimed "yes". Telling the truth is probably what kept her from receiving further punishment. Mrs. Ward loved her children deeply, and realized that while Eliza had not obeyed her instructions, she was honest and perhaps her lesson had been learned.

Emory arrived at the Ward home later that evening and his first words to Eliza were "did she whip you again?" no, she replied. "Well, I'll tell you, that is the last time that you'll get a whipping".

That night they set the date for their wedding. Mom and Dad were married two months later on August 11, 1928. [The Hulion Family Tree2.FTW]
