bulletCasenia Dixon. HUGS AT AIRPORT:
LONG-SEPARATED SISTERS
REUNITE

If you were at the Norfolk airport Aug. 30 and got hugged by a red-haired lady you didn't know, let me explain.

The lady was Casenia Thomas. She was meeting kinfolk she hadn't seen in 31 years, and she didn't want to miss hugging anybody. ``So I had to be huggin' some strangers,'' she said the other day.

She was sitting in the living room of Gale Morris' apartment off Indian River Road in Chesapeake. Gale is her baby sister. The last time they saw each other, Gale was 11 months old. Casenia was changing Gale's diapers and watching her try to walk. Now Gale is a 32-year-old with a daughter of her own, and Casenia is 48.

Dale Hulion, sister to Gale and Casenia, was there, too. Dale was 9 when Casenia left South Norfolk for California and marriage. The family lived on B Street. Five boys, three girls. Actually, Gale is Casenia's half-sister. Their mother was married to a man named Dixon. He died and their mother remarried a man named Gibson.

Over the years, the children lost touch, splitting up and going separate ways. Though Dale stayed in the Chesapeake area, Casenia has lived in California since she left. Gale, married to a military man, has been pretty steadily on the move.

The roots of this reunion were planted in 1980. Their mother, living in Florida, was the central contact point and the sisters started exchanging phone calls and letters. But Casenia, working and raising
five kids, never had a chance to head east. A saleslady for Sears, she lives in San Mateo.

``With five kids,'' she said, ``you don't just hop a plane.''

But finally the kids were all grown. The airlines were cutting each other's throats with big discounts. Casenia nailed a roundtrip ticket from California to Norfolk for $230. She called Gale to say she'd be
in town Aug. 30.

``That's good,'' Gale said. ``Aug. 31 is my birthday and that will be a great birthday present.''

Casenia said the flight went fine for her until the captain said, ``We are now landing in Norfolk.'' That put butterflies in her stomach.

``I got nervous,'' she said. ``I wondered what am I going to say? How are they going to act?

``But it was a beautiful homecoming. I kept hugging and wondering are all these my kin? I gotta be hugging some stranger.''

Casenia's plane landed at about 10 p.m. After the airport hug session, there was catching-up talk until 3 a.m. at Gale's apartment. One thing that tickled Casenia was spotting some of her own traits in Gale's 12-year-old daughter, Priscilla. ``It's the way she talks when she's upset and the way she rolls her eyes,'' Casenia said.

``When I was growing up and Momma said something I didn't like, I would make a face and roll my eyes just like that.''

One of the big things the sisters have been doing is tracking down old memories. First off, they went by the house on B Street. It's empty now. A lot of times, when you go by a childhood home, you're
surprised to see how small it was. That didn't happen to Casenia.

``I remembered it as a big old house, just like it was,'' she said. ``Maybe that's because there are so many small houses where I live in California. But I've got a lot of memories about our house . . .

``Momma would be up and doin' first thing in the morning and I would be helping her because I was the oldest. You could smell the coffee and the homemade biscuits all over the house.''

Were the biscuits good?

``Anything Momma made was good,'' Gale said.

And Casenia laughed about some of the mischief she and the other kids got into. Not Gale or Dale, though. Gale was too young when Casenia left and Dale was the well-behaved kid. The ``quiet one.''

Some of the other visits Casenia made to old territory flat-out startled her. Like when she asked Gale to take her down Military Highway ``so she could see some trees and shrubbery.'' Not much country on Military Highway any more. And there's a McDonald's where there used to be the elementary school Casenia attended.

She went by her other two old schools, Oscar Smith and Truitt, and thought both of them looked smaller than she remembered. But mostly she was bewildered by the changes. ``If my sister had dropped me off on a corner, I'd be lost,'' she said.

She may get to be more familiar with the territory. She's thinking of moving back from California because there's family here. Whether she does, she's sure of one thing . . .

``It was a great reunion.''
