THE FOLLOWING COURTESY OF MARGARET G. McLAUGHLIN

Ellen Frame Gold Ferguson emigrated to America about 1888. Her husband, George Ferguson had come earlier with Ellen'sbrothers to make their way in America. They headed for Coal Glen, Pa where only white-Anglo-Saxon protestants were hired. Only recently I have learned that being a WASP was a privilidged position (Coal Mining, was it.). George Ferguson died enroute to Coal Glen from what was later thought to be appendicitis. He was buried in an unmarked grave, probably somewhere in NJ.
Ellen's brothers insisted that she come to the USA with their wives and children so that they (the brothers) could be worry free and work, etc. The oldest, Ellen, was married and stayed in Scotland at this time but emigrated later.
Ellen resumed the name of "Gold" and was widely known as the "Widow Gold". She became a midwife and was thought to be as good in treating childrens' illnesses as any doctor of the day.
Grandma and our Great Aunt Grace always knew that their legal name was "Ferguson" though they were called "Gold" along with the rest of the family.
It says something for women's rights, Ellen Ferguson, a wage earner on her own, was forced to use the surname of grown sons--the men in the family.
Her grave is in Beechtree, simply marked "MOTHER". It lies near, but behind the KANE family stone.
George (Ferguson) Gold known as Uncle Gordie, (sometimes spelled Geordie) was the youngest of Ellen Frame Ferguson and George Ferguson. He used the name of Gold instead of his legal name of Ferguson, much to the disgust of Grandma Kane and so the name of Ferguson died out.
There is a gravestone in Beechtree that reads John F. Gould, son of James and Ellen Gold. The Gould was probably a stonecutter's error.
Grandpa Kane's family came from Creigniauc, Scotland near Glasgow. He knew the Gold-Ferguson family in Scotland and came to their home here when he fled Queen Victoria's army. He deserted when he found he was in for life. He applied for and received an honorable discharghe after Queen Victoria's death in 1903.
There were 8 Kane children when the Mother died. The father remarried and deserted his children. Grandpa Kane never foragave his father. A brother, Andrew Kane also came to America. Grandpa Kane kept in touch with his breothers and sisters - one in Scotland and others in Canada - as long as he lived.
