George
Washington Griffis was born on 13 Apr 1879 in Mississippi (?). He died on
29 May 1926 in Kirk, Limestone Cty., Tx.
George Washington Griffis was born in Chickasaw (now Webster) County, Mississippi
on April 13, 1879. That same year the Griffis family moved to Limestone County,
Texas. In 1880 they moved again, this time to neighboring Leon County. About
1882, the family returned to Limestone County, acquiring some land near the
farm community of Kirk, about six miles northwest of Groesbeck.
On August 21, 1901, George married Sarah Alice Burney, daughter of Thomas Silvanus
Burney and Mary Ann (Wimbish) Burney. They had two children, both girls; Susie
Mae and Lorene. Susie Mae married three times; (1) George Otho Laird, (2) Dewey
McNeil and (3) Roy Burns. She made her home in Lubbock, Texas where she resided
for many years. Lorene married James Melvin Jenkins and died in Waco, Texas
in 1965.
George became a prominent farmer of Limestone County. He empoyed tenant farmers
to work his land. On May 29, 1926, a tenant named Cleve Tucker argued with his
landlord over a business matter and at a point where Tucker feared physical harm
to himself at the hand of Griffis, he drew a revolver and shot Griffis dead.
At the trial his widow testified for the defense.
Sarah moved to Groesbeck and in 1932 married James (Jim) Smith, a well-to-do
local cotton ginner. She lived for many years in her home at ______ State street
but at the age of 89 her health began to fail and she could no longer live alone.
She went to live with her daughter Susie Mae in Lubbock and died there on Thanksgiving
day, November 27, 1975. She was buried in Faulkenberry cemetery, Groesbeck.
George is buried in Kirk cemetery, Kirk, Limestone County, Texas.
The following is from the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram account of the slaying of George
Washington Griffis:
TEXAS FARMER SLAIN, TENNANT SURRENDERS
Special to the Star-Telegram.
Mexia, May 29--George W. Griffith (sic), prominent farmer of the Kirk community,
six miles west of Groesbeck, was shot and killed instantly about 3:00 p.m. Saturday,
and Cleve tucker, his tenant, who surrendered to Sheriff Whit Popejoy at Groesbeck
following the shooting, is in the county jail pending making bond.
Self-defense is the plea of Tucker, who made a statement to County Attorney Scott
Reed. In his statement, Tucker says he drove up to Griffith's house, when the
landlord came out and hit him with an automobile pump and threatened to hit him
again when Tucker fired with his revolver, one shot hitting Griffith in the arm,
another in the right eye and a third just below the neck.
Tucker alleged in his statement that the trouble between him and his landlord
started over business relations, Griffith ordering Tucker to go to work. The
confessed slayer also claims that Griffith was intoxicated.
Mrs. Rutherford, a neighbor of the Griffiths, was an eye witness to the shooting,
it is said.
The slain man is survived by his wife, two daughters living at Lubbock, his mother
and several brothers who live in West Texas. The Griffith family was a pioneer
one of the Kirk community. Griffith's wife was visiting with a neighbor when
the shooting took place. Tucker has lived on the Griffith farm for nearly three
years.

Notes by Frances M. Walters:
John L. Griffis served in 24th Miss. Infantry, C.S.A.
Buried in Kirk cemetery, Kirk, Limestone County, Texas.
John L. Griffis, a substantial farmer of Limestone County, Texas, was born in
what was then Chickasaw County (now Webster), Mississippi, March 7, 1842, and
was a decendant of two old southern families. He was the son of John and Eliza
(Jennings) Griffis.
John L. and two of his brothers, William and Thomas, served in the Confederate
army during the Civil War. William, a member of Company C, Twenty-fourth Mississippi
Infantry, Walthall's brigade, was wounded at the battle of Missionary Ridge,
from the effects of which he afterward died in the hospital.
John L. Griffis was reared in his native place, where, in the spring of 1862,
he entered the Confederate service, enlisting in the same infantry company as
his brother, William. He remained about Fernandina, Florida, three months, and
his regiment was then ordered to Virginia. It reached the scene of active hostilities,
but too late to take part in the battle of Manassas. It was then sent West,
and took part in the campaigns in Kentucky and Tennessee, and was in the battles
of Perryville, Murgreesborough, Chickamaugua and Lookout Mountain.
At the last mentioned engagement, he was catptured and taken to the Federal prision
at Rock Island, Illinois where he remained until March, 1865, and was then taken
to Richmond, Virginia to be exchanged. He was at home at the time of the surrender.
With the exception of a slight wound received at Chickamaugua, from which he
was disabled for about ten days, he escaped without injury, but saw a good deal
of prision life.
After the close of hostilities, he returned to Mississippi, but in 1879 came
to Limestone County, Texas. Shortly afterward he removed to Leon County, this
State, and in 1882 moved back to Limestone County where he purchased 320 acres
paying $3.75 an acre, afterwards added 337 and one half acres more, then sold
150 acres. He had 110 acres under cultivation, the remainder in pasture, and

150 acres. He had 110 acres under cultivation, the remainder in pasture, and
all under fence. He kept considerable stock and was a well-to-do farmer.
