bulletArthur Heise was born on 7 Jan 1918 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, OH. He died on 10 Jan 1953 in the Korean War. Capt. Authur Heise (SN O-750985) was the Aircraft Commander of a B-29 Bomber and was with the 372d Bomber Sq., 307st Bomber Wing, 20th Bomber Command, SAC. of the USAF, flying out of Kadina AFB in Okinawa during the Korean War. On 10 January 1953, he was on a bombing mission
over the Anju Marshalling Yard when his B-29 (Aircraft Number 44-61802) was hit by ememy fire from "Migs" immediately prior to bombs away (2038 hours). Immediately following bombs away and while still under attack aircraft started losing altitude. "Mayday" call received from aircraft at 2048 hours. At 2053 hours commander reported "Hit Bad, have wounded men, will try to get to K-13". At 2106 hours commander reported "We are bailing out, number-three engine on fire". Twelve of thirteen members of the crew bailed out--and reported that they never saw Capt. Heise' parachute. Capt. Heise flew the burning B-29 toward friendly lines while USAF Fighter Jets followed him, however, the B-29 continued to descend until it hit the side of a mountain and exploded. When friendly forces got to the wreakage, there was no trace of Capt. Heise. All twelve crew members were repatriated under "Operation Big Switch", and another POW (a Major David F. MacGhee) reported that a Chinese interogator informed him that the North Koreans had found Capt. Heise' remains in the wreakage. Capt. Heise was declared dead 12 January 1954 and a M.I.A. marker was placed in Arlington National Cemetary, Memorial Section H-391.
Capt. Heise served in the C.B.I. (China-Burma-India) theater of the US Army Air Corp. during World War II, flying first out of India and then out of Tinian of the Mariana Islands.
Arthur was an accomplished pianist.
