HORTON
Stephen Horton was born July 18, 1809, in Georgia according to the 1850 and
1860 U.S. Census records but the 1880 census records states he was born in North
Carolina as was his mother and father. He died October 13, 1888 and is buried
by his second wife in the Methodist Cemetery at Belmont, Alabama. His tombstone
as well as that of his second wife and two of his daughters are intact. Stephen
Horton came to Alabama as a child or young man because he patented land in Greene
County, Alabama on
August 29, 1831. Other Hortons receiving land grants in Greene County were Albert
C. Horton on November 13, 1830, Jesse Horton on October 3, 1823, and Myrick Horton
on January 17, 1823. Stephen also patented land in Sumter County in 1834. He
patented 80 acres of land in Sumter County, certificate number 3576, on December
5, 1834. Public records indicate that he was active in community affairs of
the Belmont area. He was not a rich planter but a farmer with substantial property.
The 1850 census states that he was a farmer, born in Georgia, and had five children.
His real property was valued at $1,500. In 1840 he owned four slaves, in 1850
16 slaves, and in 1860 23 slaves. In 1860 his real property was valued at
$1,800 and personal property at $25,000. At his death in 1888 he left considerable
real property to his daughter, Mary E. A. (Speed) White and grandchildren, Ada
Caldwell Tutt, Marshall Horton Caldwell, and Annie Caldwell Flowers. His daughters
Mary and Sarah Anne were the two of his five children to marry and have descendants.
There is some evidence that Stephen Horton was born in Hancock County, Georgia
and joined relatives and friends in Alabama.
The following news item appeared in the June 30, 1885, issue of the Sumter County
Journal: "A small party of relatives & friends paid homage to the 75th
birthday of Col. S. Horton on the 14 inst. & were gratified to find him hale
& hearty. His health was drank (sic) in appropriate terms. The dinner was
splendid and enjoyed by old and young alike."
There is a tradition in the family attributed to Col. Horton. When the stars
fell on Alabama his slaves became frightened and rushed from their cabins and
ran to the Horton house fearful that judgement day had arrived. He told them
to go back home and wait until Gabriel blew his trumped and then they would know
the time had come.
Stephen Married (4.3) Elizabeth Ann Coats on April 14, 1831, in Greene County,
Alabama (Greene County, Ala. Marriage Records, Bk. B, p. 15). Elizabeth Ann was
born circa 1810 in Tennessee and died after her youngest child, Margaret A.,
was born in 1844 and Stephen's second marriage in 1850 to Elizabeth R. (Betsy)
b. October 8, 1811, d. August 2, 1886. There were no children from the second
marriage. The children of Stephen and Elizabeth Ann Coats Horton were: Sarah
Anne, B. 1832, d. ca. 1860; Mary E. A., b. 1835: Francis S. A. (Fannie), b.
May 9, 1836, d. June 3, 1867: John W. W., b. 1843; Margaret Ann, b. October
6, 1844, d. August 22, 1863.
3.1 Sarah Anne (b. 1832, d. 1860) married John T. Caldwell on March 16, 1850
(Book 2, p. 93, Sumter County Marriage Records). The children of Sarah Anne
Horton Caldwell received $59.33 from the estate of John Coats, their mother's
share, (Sumter County, Ala. Orphans Minutes, Bk. 10). The children of Sarah
Anne and John T. Caldwell were: Ada V., Marshall Horton, and Sarah Anne (Annie).
See Caldwell chapter for descendants.
3.2 Mary E. A., b. 1835, d. ca. 1890, married Benjamin R. Speed, b. July 11,1828,
d. October 1866. On September 5, 1850 (Sumter County, Ala. Marriage Records).
Mary and Benjamin Speed were the parents of the following children: T. Carl;
James B. who married M.S., b. December 14, 1867, d. December 19, 1893; Stephen
who married a widow, Colonia Muffler, and had at least two children, Origen and
Mary Johnnie. Mary Horton married, second, a Mr. White and they had one child,
Neil White. Mary Johnnie Speed married Origen William Bates son of William and
Martha Bates (William Bates was the son of Sophia Coats by her first marriage.
See Harper and Coats chapters.) The children of Johnnie and Origen Bates were:
Benjamin; Winsley; Bertha who married A. D. Gandy; Etta who married John Sailems;
and Mattie who married Charlie Spidle.
3.3 Francis S.A. (Fannie) was born May 9, 1836, and died June 3, 1867. She did
not marry and is buried near her father in the Methodist Cemetery at Belmont.
3.4 John W.W. was a Confederate soldier as his name appears on theConfederate
memorial in the Livingston, Alabama., Court House Square. Stephen Horton was
appointed guardian of John and Margaret A. when they inherited from the estate
of their grandfather, John Coats in 1861. Stephen was discharged as guardian
of J.W.W. Horton on October 24, 1863, Fannie S.A. Horton was witness to the settlement.
It is deducted that John was killed in the Civil War because he is not mentioned
in his father'swill and there is not a tombstone for him at Belmont and no mention
of him in publicrecords after 1863.
3.5 Margaret Ann. Her tombstone reads: "Margaret Ann daughter of S. &E.A.
Horton, Born October 6, 1844---Died Aug. 22, 1863, 18 yrs. 10 mo. & 16 days.

fell on Alabama his slaves became frightened and rushed from their cabins and
ran to the Horton house fearful that judgement day had arrived. He told them
to go back home and wait until Gabriel blew his trumped and then they would know
the time had come.
Stephen Married (4.3) Elizabeth Ann Coats on April 14, 1831, in Greene County,
Alabama (Greene County, Ala. Marriage Records, Bk. B, p. 15). Elizabeth Ann was
born circa 1810 in Tennessee and died after her youngest child, Margaret A.,
was born in 1844 and Stephen's second marriage in 1850 to Elizabeth R. (Betsy)
b. October 8, 1811, d. August 2, 1886. There were no children from the second
marriage. The children of Stephen and Elizabeth Ann Coats Horton were: Sarah
Anne, B. 1832, d. ca. 1860; Mary E. A., b. 1835: Francis S. A. (Fannie), b.
May 9, 1836, d. June 3, 1867: John W. W., b. 1843; Margaret Ann, b. October

3.1 Sarah Anne (b. 1832, d. 1860) married John T. Caldwell on March 16, 1850
(Book 2, p. 93, Sumter County Marriage Records). The children of Sarah Anne
Horton Caldwell received $59.33 from the estate of John Coats, their mother's
share, (Sumter County, Ala. Orphans Minutes, Bk. 10). The children of Sarah
Anne and John T. Caldwell were: Ada V., Marshall Horton, and Sarah Anne (Annie).
See Caldwell chapter for descendants.
3.2 Mary E. A., b. 1835, d. ca. 1890, married Benjamin R. Speed, b. July 11,1828,
d. October 1866. On September 5, 1850 (Sumter County, Ala. Marriage Records).

James B. who married M.S., b.

See Harper and Coats chapters.) The children of Johnnie and Origen Bates were:
Benjamin; Winsley; Bertha who married A. D. Gandy; Etta who married John Sailems;
and Mattie who married Charlie Spidle.
