A memorial service will be held for Harry F. Armstrong of Sunnyside Road, Scotia, civic leader and owner of a Schenectady accounting firm, who died Wednesday at home after a long illness. He was 97.

Mr. Armstrong was born in Linden, Pa., and lived in the Schenectady area since 1936.
The former owner of two department stores in Pennsylvania, he was president and treasurer of Armstrong-Collier Inc. and Arco Realty Corp. in the state. Mr. Armstrong held the position of executive vice president of Ellis Mills of Pottstown and director and secretary of the Wilmar Realty Corp. in Pottstown, both in Pennsylvania.
In Schenectady, he owned the Armstrong Co. for many years.
A World War I Army captain, Mr. Armstrong served as an aide to Gen. John J. Pershing, commander in chief of American Expeditionary Forces.
He was past president and member of the board of directors for the Community Chest, now the United Way; former president of the Schenectady Boys Club, the Schenectady County Chamber of Commerce, the Mohawk Club and Mohawk Golf Club, Schenectady Rotary Club, the former Schenectady Bureau of Municipal Research, and former H.S. Barney Co., and department store in Schenectady. Mr. Armstrong was also past chairman of the United Way.
He served on the board of directors of the Schenectady Trust Co., now TrustCo Bank of New York, and was named "director emeriti" at the bank in 1979.
Also, Mr. Armstrong served on the board of directors of the former Andrew W, Wood Co., the former Vandot Realty, the former Aero Vac Corp., Capital City Travelers Aid, Schenectady Museum, Schenectady County Child Guidance Center, Western Gateway Broadcasting Co., and served as past president and on the board of directors of the Industrial Development Council.
A past director of the Schenectady Curling Club, Mr. Armstrong was a past trustee of the Ellis Hospital board of trustees and in 1977, he was named trustee emeritus of the hospital.
He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Schenectady.
His wife, Eleanor Hudgins Armstrong, died in 1984.
Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Armstrong Muir of Englewood, Fla.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 14, at the First Reformed Church.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Schenectady Boys Club, Ellis Hospital Building Fund or Proctor's Theatre.
Arrangements are by the Baxter Funeral Home.
