Sept. 1877. When Crazy Horse reached the White River, some 10,000 Lakota had gathered at the agency. He Dog met him, warning, 'Watch your step--you are going into a bad place.' Crook had ordered Bradley to 'capture this chief, confine him, and send him under guard to Omaha.' So, while Crazy Horse was led into the adjutant's office at Fort Robinson, Lee was told that Bradley would not see the chief, and that he must be placed in the guardhouse. Under the charge of Captain James Kennington, Crazy Horse was led towards the prison, still believing Lee's assurances that he could speak to the commanding officer. The Indian Policeman Turning Bear, Wooden Sword, Leaper, and Little Big Man escorted him. Passing a soldier with a bayonetted rifle. Crazy Horse saw the tiny cell's barred windows. He smelled the foul stench and realized for the first time that he was to be imprisoned. Drawing a knife, he reeled around, slashing Little Big Man across the forearm. Then Little Big Man grasped his old friend's arms, echoing Crazy Horse's vision. American Horse and Red Cloud screamed, 'Shoot to kill!" Kennington bellowed, 'Stab the son of a bitch!'
His arms pinioned, Crazy Horse felt the bayonet of Private William Gentles pierce his back. Then it was thrust again, through his kidneys. Falling into Little Big Man's arms, Crazy Horse whispered, 'Let me go, my friends. You have got me hurt enough.' He Dog stepped up and Crazy Horse asked, 'See where I am hurt. I can feel the blood flowing.' Then Touch the Clouds picked up the Oglala gently in his arms, and carried him in to the adjutant's office.
Worm and Touch the Clouds spent the night beside Crazy Horse, who told them, 'I am bad hurt. Tell the people it is no use to depend on me any more now.' He died early in the morning of 6th September 1877.
