Deborah Biesbrock of Pensacola, FL sent information she found while at the Pascagoula Library. It is a Callaway Family Association Journal, but includes the family of John WARD III and Elijah WARD. Elijah WARD's granddaughter, Nancy Ellen CHILDRESS, married James Clifford CALLAWAY. The story excerpt that follows is probably familiar, but there is a little additional insight into the history: "Jackson Knight, an Irishman, and a blacksmith, was apparently residing within the Creek nation, near the Chattahooche crossing, practicing his trade, as provided for in the 1796 New York Treaty between Federal (US) commissioners and the 'whole' Creek nation. Under this provision, the United States was to allow the Creek nation 'two blacksmiths and two strikers, with tools and iron' [History of Alabama and Incidentally of Georgia and Mississippi, From the Earliest Period, Pickett, Albert James. 1962. Birmingham.]" My question is: were there blacksmiths there before the treaty? If not, this would seem to cast more doubt on the legend as Nancy is said to have married John WARD ca 1777.
