Harry McKain Dies; Artist, Designer of Church Windows

Harry L. McKain, 73, a retired artist who designed, painted and installed hundreds of stained glas windows in churches within a 400-mile radius of Youngstown, died of a heart attack at 7 a.m. Sunday at Ormond Beach, Fla., Memorial Hospital. Mr. McKain had lived at 1320 Fliming Ave., Ormond Beach, for several years.
Mr. McKain was born Nov. 22, 1896, in Kittannig, Pa., a son of Mr. and Mrs. John McKain. He moved here from Aploop, Pa., in 1912 and became an apprentence to Amos Dolde who had a shop in Central Square.
Mr. McKain went into business in 1921, owning and opeating the East Ohio Art Glass Co. at his home, 1453 Holland Ave. He retired in 1952 and form the next 10 years did a few church jobs a year as the McKain Art Glass Shop.
One of his best known works was done in 1957 when he designed and made the stained glass window depicting the Holy Family which is above the altar at Holy Family Church in Poland. In addition to church windows he also specialized in ribbon-cut picture windows for homes.
Besides his wife, the former Emma Miller, whom he married Sept. 15, 1920, he leaves four daughters, Mrs. Donald Stitle of Austintown, Mrs. Michael Yank and Mrs. James Palagy of Youngstown, and Mrs. Kenneth Osborne of Mount Clemems, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. Mina Dout of Daytona Beach, Fla., three brothers, John Nd Kenneth of Daytona and Vernon of Jacksonville, Fla.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Weller Funeral Home where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
