He died on 18 Dec 1898 in Mossy Head, Walton Co., FL. John Benjamin MEIGS
is the youngest son of Josiah MEIGS and Clara BENJAMIN. He was born in Athens,
Georgia while his father was the President of the University of Georgia, America's
oldest state university. John B and his wife Gabriella lived most of their lives
in Walton County, Florida and are buried side by side at Crowder Cemetary near
Mossy Head, Florida. John B served his country as an Indian fighter in the US
Army. He is buried with a veteran's headstone denoting his service to country.
John B was a schoolteacher most of his life as listed on the Walton County,
Florida 1850 Census.
John Benjamin Meigs came home from the Indian War with Elijah and met his
daughter Gabriella, a young war widow with two small children and John B. married
her." Fred confirms her first husband's name was HART and added that he
was killed in the Seminole Indian War. He also added that John B. had a prior
marriage to Delia BOARDMAN of NYC, NY and that he was a well educated young sailor.
After John Benjamin [MEIGS] married Elijah's daughter Gabriella [18441 they
moved from Santa Rosa Co. to Walton Co. - which since 1915 that part is now Okaloosa
Co., they moved up near what is now Laurel Hill the community was called Almarante,
and there is now a cemetery near there on hi-way 85 named Almarante Cemetery.
It was there the first Florida election was held in 1845 that the polling (voting)
place was at Elijah's house. Elijah and John Benjamin were listed as what we
would today call Poll Watchers." Editor's note: If Fred is referrin to the
WARD family, my opinion of when they left Ward's Basin is a little different;
I believe they left there ca 1825, pulled back into Covington Co. AL where they
are found in the 1830 census, and returned to Walton Co. where they are found
in the 1840 census They could have returned to Ward's Basin for a few years but
Elijah signed up for the Indian War 10 May 1837 a Almarante on the Yellow River.
Does anyone know the disposition of the land at Ward's Basin?
