He came out to Carolina in 1733- 1734. He was from the village of Gravesend in County Kent England. The records in his name in Granville County North Carolina and subsequent derived counties Bute formed in 1764 from Granville and divided in 1779 into Warren and Franklin. Bute ceasing to exist but the records of Bute remain in the Warren County records at Warrenton, North Carolina are intact and fairly numerous. I found that Thomas was the first settler in Carolina who spelled his name the way we do. He came to Granville County, or at least took land there, after the formation of Granville from Edgecombe in 1746. The Edgecombe records list no one named Mullins prior to 1758. There were two families of similar name who had to be considered sincethey had settled east of Franklin prior to the appearance of Thomas in the Granville records. Abraham Moulin came to Bertie county about 1707, but these people spell their name Mullen and still do to this day. I spent a lot of time finding no connection. Robard Molines (spelled variously even Mullines) in the early court Records of North Carolina (foud or more very interesting volumes) was finally eliminated by a mention in the Colonial Records of North Carolina that he and his wife Elinor had died without issue. Volume 2 page 377. So Thomas the blacksmith of Cedar Creek was our ancestor, but the search for reasonable proof took ten years from 1967 to 1977, but it was a labor of love and great fun to anyone who enjoys history. These are among the Bute County records and papers. Bute County book 5 page 229 a deed of most of his property to a Mr Bell. Apparently a favorite son in law was to get the land in anticipation of Thomas death. 1050 acres for 10 lbs. After 1775 there are no further deeds executed by Thomas Mullins. He was deadbefore the splitup of Bute County in1779. The Bute county Tax List of 1771 lists Thomas Mullins 1000 more acres more or less and tow male negroes above the age of 16 and so taxable. Since the document from England lists Thomas age at 19 in 1733 we can calculate his birthyear as 1714. His wifes name is not know, but I suspect She was Anne Clement. Only fragments of trhe Old Albemarle Parish records survive, but an entry in 1740 list the the birth of John Mullins parents Thomas and Anne. The Clements in eastern North Carolina claimed descent from Jeremiah Clement who had comeout to Virginia in 1640. He was a stockholder in theold Virginia Company and settled in Surry County which is adjacent to the easternmost tier of Modern North Carolina counties. Thomas named one son Jeremiah and another Clement. This is what the genealogist call a deduction, and one can take it for what it is worth. Not much as history. St George Parish of Gravesend may have records dating to the early 1700's and an examination of any that have survived could pour light on Thomas family in the old country. It is work a try and I will try. Dr George Mullins Logan West Virginia. Thomas Mullins of Granville Franklin Counties North Carolina. Thomas was land grantee in Granville as early as 1760. See deeds. . . . His wife's name is not known. Sons: John Mullins,Jeremiah Mullins, Clemnet Mullins, and Nathaniel Mullins and others not known to me. Jim Burgess statement - In this document Dr Mullins spent a lot of time discussing the Abraham Mullen Jacob Mullen connection when he later disagreed with and I agree. The one thing seemed consistent in our research is the spelling of the name MULLINS. When you study the records our family always used the spelling MULLINS and the others used MULLEN. Another important point is that our Mullins stayed in the following North Carolina counties: Granville was formed in 1746 from Edgecombe Bute formed in 1764 and was discontinued in 1779 from Granville In 1779 Bute ceased to exist and divided into Warren and Franklin Counties. No further divisions of either took place until the formation of Vance County in 1881, by this time our families were long gone from the area. Randolph County North Carolina was formed in 1770 from Guilford. To find more information we should search in Granville, Edgecombe, Bute, Warren, Franklin, Randolph and Guilford. There will be more clues of our family in this area of North Carolina. Dr. Mullins notes continued In the records of Warren county prepared by Kerr arementioned certain colonial records of old Bute county. Among the wills mentioned was the will of William Baker who died in 1777. His will mentions both Clement and John Mullins. Now the descendants of Clement say he had a brother named Jeremiah Mullins. Since the will of John bore the mark of Nathaniel Mullins as witness, onecan assume that Thomas's sons were John, Clement, Nathaniel and Jeremiah. There may have been others, of course. See Warren County Records. Abstract Records of Colonial Bute County by Kerr. Clement Mullins and Betsy Parker were living in Mecklenburg (Charlotte in 1807.
