Samuel NICHOLS was born in 1804 in Probably in Kershaw County, South Carolina. Many of you have seen the following report made by Corp. James Evans, Co. D. 1st FL (US) Cav. on 12 March 1865. I first received a copy of this excerpt from Wiley Ward of Andalusia, AL.

"Heard that Sergt. Ward Co. B, 1st Fla. Cav. and five men had killed old man Nichols [Samuel] and one Son [Covall] and wounded another son [Austin] of the old man on Shoal River in Walton Co., Fla. on or about the 8th day of March 1865."

Cpl. EVANS is no doubt referring to Celestine WARD and the infamous feud with the NICHOLS' family. I recently cited this to Mark Curenton and mentioned that I did not know the original source; Mark replied with that source. The above excerpt is only a part of that report and was made as part of the investigation into Lt. Joseph SANDERS' activities and not Sgt. WARD's. The rest, in military terms, was a debriefing. For reference to the "roll call" offered in recent newsletters, Lt. Sanders was a former Confederate enlisted man and officer from Dale Co., AL; Cpl. EVANS was from Pike Co., AL. The following is the full report sent to me by Mark:

12th March 1865

Statement of James Evans, Corp., Co. D, lst Fla. Cav. who left with the scouting party under Lieut. Sanders reports as follows Landed at Four Mile Landing, Choctawhatchee river Feb. 27, 1865, marched along the river to between Hewitts Bluff and Geneva.

Met with no force of the enemy. the nearest heard of was reported at Camblton and Mariana consisting of three Co.s of Cav. and one piece of Artillery. Two small Co.s of Cav. are reported at Elba, Coffee Co., Ala.

The party separated at Hewitt's Bluff March 2d to meet again March 14th 7 miles above Newton, Dale Co., Ala.

Heard that Sergt Wm. Barnes Co. D, lst Fla. Cav. who had been left at Mr. Peacock's house in Skipperville, Dale Co., Ala. on the 17th of December 1864 with a broken leg by Lieut Sanders had been subjected to an amputation by Dr. Stugall: the Dr. is reported to have said that if he could get a lick at Sergt. Barnes he the Dr. would finish him. heard that Sergt Barnes had died in consequence of the amputation.

Heard that some deserters from the lst Fla. Cav. have robbed Mr. Rogers of $83 in U. S. money.

Heard that Sergt. Ward Co. B, lst Fla. Cav. and five men had killed old man Nichols and one Son and wounded another son of the old man on Shoal River in Walton Co. Fla. on or about the 8th day of March 1865.

Corp. James Evans brought in two horses captured by him.

This report remains the only concrete evidence we have of the WARD/NICHOLS feud in Walton Co., FL and certainly substantiates at least part of the lore surrounding it. Many dates, some much later, have been given for this feud and I think this report narrows it down considerably.

He was married to Ginsy HARE on 6 Oct 1878 in Escambia Co., FL. Children were: Sarah NICHOLS .

Sarah NICHOLS was born between 1647 and 1667. She died between 1682 and 1751.

She was married to Moses Wheeler between 1682 and 1716. Children were: Moses W. Wheeler.

Sarah NICHOLS was born between 1621 and 1647. She died between 1669 and 1735.

She was married to John Hammond in 1664.

Selena Elizabeth NICHOLS was born in 1894.
