Amy
Thompson was born on 11 Jan 1842 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. She died
on 1 Sep 1922 in Monroe, Jasper Co., Iowa. obituary of Amy Thompson Townsend
Monroe, Iowa September 7, 1922
Amy Townsend, daughter of David and Jemima Thompson, was born at
Pennsville, Ohio, January 11, 1842.
Born of Quaker parentage, she was well trained in the religious
life. When quite young she was converted and united with the Methodist
Epsicopal Church. She brought her membership with her to Iowa and
remained a devoted member to the close of her life.
On September 14, 1865 she was married to Harrison Townsend, the
soldier for whom she had waited till the close of the war. They came
west crossing the Mississippi River at Davenport, coming by rail to
Nevada then by stage to Des Moines where they remained until November 22,
1866 when they came to Monroe which has been her home.
Mrs. Townsend was the mother of eight children, Mrs. H.L. Orcutt and
Mrs. J. Lea Taylor, of Monroe, Iowa; Frank L. and Orie P. Townsend, of
Des Moines, Iowa; U.S. Townsend, of Newton, Iowa; Mrs. H.A. Ingham, of
Tucson, Arizona; George D. Townsend who died in infancy and Hal Townsend
who preceded her in death three and a half years, at the age of 34. One
brother, George Thompson of Lancaster, Ohio, twelve grand children and
three great grand children survive her.
She was a charter member of Shelledy Relief Corps in which she was
always greatly interested and active as long as her strength permitted.
Mrs. Townsend was a woman of beautiful christian character. She had
high ideals of character, justice and duty. Her life in her home, church
and community was a beautiful expression of these ideals.
The one dominant feature of her whole life was forgetfulness of self
in service for others.
She was most patient during her affliction and deeply appreciative
of all that was done for her comfort.
She was conscious that the call of the Master would come soon and
during her last weeks of illness expressed a desire that the summons be
not delayed.
She was confident in faith and conpanionship of Jesus and before her
going gave a beautiful and tender expression of this faith in a personal
word to each of the children.
On Friday evening September 1, 1922, at seven minutes after eight
o'clock quietly and peacefully she passed into the triumph of this faith.
Largely attended funeral services were held at the Methodist Church
conducted by the Pastor Rev. E.E. Ilgenfritz. A duet was rendered by
Fred Hough and sister Mrs. Byron Chestnutt, of Newton, "Face to Face"
and
a quartet composed of Mrs. M.I. Shaw, Mrs. O.M. Wilson, Wm. Van Baren and
Horace Cash sang "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Asleep in Jesus".
The sons and sons-in-law acted as Pall Bearers.
The relief Corps attended in a body.
TYhe floral offerings were many and beautiful.
Interment was in the Monroe Cemetary.
The bereaved family have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.
Those from out of town attending the funeral services of Mrs.
Townsend other than the children were a grandson and wife, Mr. and Mrs.
O.P. Townsend, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; the two grandsons, Kenneth and

Mrs. Robert Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Toedt, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hough
and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. B. Chestnutt, and Mr. H.J. Agnew, of Newton,
Iowa. From Des Moines were Mr. and Mrs. G.O. Eberhart, Mrs, Baxter,
Frank Marion, Mr. and Mrs. W. Ammons, Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Lawson; Mrs. May

The family of Mrs. Amy Townsend wish to express their sincere thanks
to those who have been so kind and helpful during her illness and their
