Townsend was born on 23 Dec 1840 in Harrisville, Belmont Co., Ohio. He died
on 20 Nov 1913 in Monroe, Jasper Co., Iowa. obituary Harrison Townsend Monroe,
Iowa November 27, 1913
Harrison Townsend was born in Harrisville, Belmont Co., Ohio,
December 23, 1840 and answered the Heavenly Father's call to reward
November 20, 1913, aged 72 years, 10 months and 27 days.
When but ten years of age he lost both his father and mother by
death. Thus deprived of the best of all counsel and love that a boy can
know in this life, he was given a home with his sister, Mrs. John
Thompson. At the age of fifteen he set to learn the trade of
blacksmithing near McConnelsville, Ohio, where he remained until eighteen
years old. For this service as apprenticeship he received the wage of
$75.00 per year.
On September 14, 1865 he was united in marriage to Miss Amy Thompson
at Painsville, Ohio. In the spring of 1866 they came to Iowa, crossing
the Mississippi at Davenport, coming by rail to Nevada, then by stage to
Des Moines where they remained until November 22nd of that year when they
came to Monroe, Iowa. Had he lived until nine o'clock of the morning
following the funeral service he would have resided in Monroe 47 years.
Their first Monroe home was what is now the Oliver Shaw home. In the
spring of 1877 they bought the property which has been in continuous use
os the family residence since the time of its purchase.
The home was enriched by the gift of eight children: Mrs. H.L.
Orcutt and Mrs. J. Lea Taylor, of Monroe, Iowa, Mrs. H. A. Ingham of
Milwaukee, Wisconson, Frank L. and Orie P. Townsend of Des Moines, Iowa,
Uly S. and Hal Townsend of Newton, Iowa, and George Townsend, who died in
infancy.
While following the peaceful trade he had chosen as a life work, the
civil war cloud assumed such a threatening aspect, that hearing the first
call for volunteers, he felt it his duty as a loyal citizen to offer his
services though not 18 years of age.
At the close of the 3 month service he reenlisted in Company E. 78th
Ohio Volunteer Infantry December 13, 1861, which was mustered into
service, December 25, 1861. On the same day the company went to camp
Gilbert with 94 as strong, brave reliable men as could be found in the
country, sons of religious parents, men of good families, school
teachers, merchants, farmers, mechanics, clerks and tradesmen went forth
from comfortable homes to defend those homes from treason and rebellion.
The record of the regiment declares that no company in the regiment
did more efficient service nor suffered more upon the field of battle or
from hardship and exposure than did Company E.
With this company Mr. Townsend served with courage and manliness as
private, corporal and sergeant.
The principal engagements in which he took part were Ft. Donelson,
Shiloh, Jackson, Black River, Vicksburg, and from Atlanta went with
Sherman on his march of the sea. He was honorably discharged and
mustered out at Columbus, Ohio July 16. 1865.
When a young man Mr. Townsend united with the church but after
coming to Iowa, did not place his membership with the local church for
some years. With his private papers this record was filed in his own
hand writing, "Joined the M.E. Church February 5, 1893."
Mr. Townsend was a man whose staunch character and daily christain
living was not only above reproach, but an example and an inspiration to
all who knew him. A man of strong convictions, of unswerving faith and
loyalty to duty. He loved his country, his church, his home. For them
he lived, toiled and sacrificed. Interested in all that made for the
prosperity and food of the community he gave to it his counsel and
service.
In the manner of life he was quiet and of few words, yet whose daily
living was a message of righteousness.
Until seven years ago he possessed unusual vigor, when his first
affliction came. Since that time he has been able to do only his
ordinary tasks in keeping up the home. With one of these last tasks he
was engaged on last Wednesday when the final summons came, and at two
o'clock on Thursday morning he was taken to his eternal reward.
His going was as peaceful and quiet as the coming of the silent
messenger who bade him lay down his tools of toil and enter into rest.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Friday afternoon
at 2:30. A short discourse was given by the pastor Rev. Hiller from the
text Genesis 5:24. Rev. Sharpe of the U.P. Church assisted in the
service. Two favorite hymns of "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Asleep
in
Jesus" were sung by a quartet composed of Mrs. Mark Shaw, Mrs. Ralph
Hendershot, Messers. L.W. and James Cochrane with Mrs. L.W. Cochrane at
the piano. The four sons and two sons-in-law were acting pallbearers,
and members of the G.A. The flag Mr. Townsend carried as Color Bearer of
the Post was draped about the casket. The floral offerings were many and
beautiful. The relatives present from out of towm were Geo. Thompson,
Mrs. Leroy Thompson, Marshalltown; Mrs. Reece Townsend and her son,
Jefferson; Mrs. Will Shannon, Bloomfield; Mrs. Benjamin Hallowell and
daughter, Mt. Pleasant; Mr. Reece Bond, Newton.

Distressing Incident - A truly distressing and melancholy event
transpired, on Wednesday last, in the woods between the Laurel and
Atkinson forks of the Big Stillwater, near West Chester, Tuscarawa Co.,
Ohio. The circumstances are these: A Mr. Townsend and a Mr. Wells went
out in company, hunting. They had separated a little distance. Mr.
Townsend espying a flock of turkeys, had laid down, apparently with the
intention of shooting, imitating the noise of a turkey, in order to draw
them closer. Mr. Wells coming up at the same time, also saw the turkeys;
and seeing the head of Mr. Townsend just rising above the ground, (who
was in the act of firing himself), he unfortunately mistook the movement
of his friend's head for the motion of a turkey; whereupon he levelled
and fired. The ball pierced the head of Mr. Townsend, who expired before
Mr. Wells had time to run to him; which the latter did as quick as
possible, in order to pick up his turkey, as he thought-- entirely
unconscious of the distracting catastrophe, until his arrival at the
fatal spot.
What renders the event truly distressing is, that they were related.
They had lived neighbors near Mountpleasant. Mr. Wells had removed some
time previous, near to where the unhappy scene transpired, and Mr.
Townsend had gone out there in order to pay a visit to his friend.
