John came from Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland when about 17 years old around 1829. He came up the wally to a mill, stopped there and took a job. The miller was Jess VanZile, his future father in law. At that time, his future wife was but a toddler. Nearly eighteen years later, he married her.
