First part: Images from Ecuador At the image to the left we see José Manuel, he is in charge of the fiesta, and that will cost him a lot. When they have a religious fiesta in Sucarte it is a great honor to be responsible for the fiesta, but it can be a heavy burden too, he must get food and drink to everyone for three days to the end. The fiesta begins at a Saturday, then they slaughter a cow and they eat and drink as much as they can. The local musician of Sucarte is a one-man-band..he comes along and entertaining while the others dance. The next day people dress in their finest clothing and goes to church in Cañar.
Some tried to seek a better life: José Maria is one of the few who went to Guayaquil to seek fortune. He cut his long hair plait, put on mestiz clothing. But he couldn't speak very good Spanish, and he couldn't hide the fact that he is a native man, and he didn't get any work. Now he is home in Juncal again. He still were the meztishat and want to speak Spanish, but he doesn't any longer own any fields here, so he never is asked to join the others in the voluntary communal work. He can't have any himself because he doesn't own any land, so they do not invite him.
Old Luis is very proud to wear his poncho.
Daily work at the field.
