In his early days Hezekiah was a "settlement builder," going ahead in the deep forests of Wisconsin, building cabins and clearing ground for the settlers. He was always a very poor man. The latter part of his life he lived in Irish Grove and was a country shoemaker and the Sexton of the Irish Grove Presbyterian Church. In Springfield, IL he was the Secton for the Baptist Church. He died at the home of his daughter, Annie Rachel Patterson.
ngfield, IL in 1850. They belonged to the Baptist Church there, and Hezekiah was Sexton. They moved from Springfield to Middletown, IL in 1851. Daughters Libby and Ellen worked in Springfield. Ellen worked for Mrs. Abraham Lincoln. The family lived in Galena, IL in 1868, where the youngest daughter, Cornelia, was married.
[NI9310] Worked in the brickyard, making bricks by molding them. He molded 550,000 bricks during one summer. Died unmarried, about 30 years old, of tuberculosis.
[NI9311] Soldier in Mexican War. He disappeared soon after he returned from the war and was never seen again. He was last seen walking along the shore of the Illinois River at Beardstown, arm in arm with a strange man.
