INDEX

[NI2305] Ira was an ensign in the war of 1812. He moved to Texas with his wife, Rebecca Greenleaf, in 1834, and settled in the Power and Hewetson colony. He received a lot in the Irish-Mexican village of Refugio and a league on the San Antonio River. He became a Captain of the local militia. He led men against the Mexicans during the Texas Revolution at La Bahia, Fort Lipantilan, Nueces Crossing in 1835. In Nov 1835, he took a seat on the General Council at San Felipe. There he served on the standing committee on naval affairs, which sponsored the resolution establishing the Texas Navy. He signed an address issued by the council explaining the Texas side of the conflict with Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. In Dec 1835, the Council appointed him a Captain of artillery in the regular army, and he resigned from the legislative body to recruit a company primarily from around Refugio and San Patricio. In early 1836, when James Fannin reorganized the La Bahia garrison, Ira Westover's company was put in the Lafayette Battalion. His company was the only regular army unit in Fannin's regiment during the Goliad campaign of 1836. After the battle of Coleto Creek, on 27 Mar 1836, Ira Westover and most of his company were brutally shot at Goliad, TX, after they had surrendered to the Mexicans as prisoners of war.

[NI11290] After her husband's death at Goliad, Rebecca Greenleaf Westover fled San Patricio to Harrisburg, where she joined others in the "Runaway Scrape." She eventually went to Galveston, then returned to San Patricio. She remarried to a ___ McIntyre, and after the death of her second husband she moved to Austin, where she married again to Oliver Jones. The couple eventually moved to Galveston. While visiting in Houston, Rebecca Westover McIntyre Jones died, and was buried int he cemetery of the old Pretestant Episcopal Church.
