John Webster and his family settled in Watertown, MA in the early 1630s and moved to Hartford, CT, in 1636, probably with Thomas Hooker's group, which left Newtownm, MA, in April 1636. He was one of the original landowners of Hartford, was a member of the committee that sat with the Court of Magistrates of the Colony of CT in 1637 and 1638, and became an Assistant to the General Court of the Colony in 1639. He traveled to towns in CT as a judge, helped create criminal laws for the colony, settled land and boundary disputes, helped the New England Congress supply CT towns with soldiers and ammunition for an expedition against the Indians, and surveyed the highway from Hartford to Windwor. He was a Commissioner to the United Colonies of New England in 1654. The Colony of CT elected him as Deputy Governor in 1655, and in 1656 as Governor. Elections were annual, and prior to 1659 it was believed that no person should serve a term of more than one year. In 1657 John Winthrop was elected Governor, with Thomas Welles as Deputy Governor and John Webster as Chief Magistrate.
ngregational Church in Hartford. A church dispute caused the congregation to split. The dissenting group, of which John Webster was a prominent member, wanted to withdraw from the Hartford church and move to MA, but the church would not release them from their church covenant. Through the arbitration of some MA church leaders, the Hartford dissenters were allowed to move to MA, and John Webster moved with that group. John and his family first moved to Northhampton, MA, and later to Hadley, where he was made a Magistrate in May 1660. He died there of a fever, and is buried there. His wife Agnes died in Hartford in 1667.
[NI4675] Freeman, Hartford, 1645; Farmington, 1669.
[NI18754] Daughter of Gov. John Webster.
[NI5333] Married John(?) Hunt.
[NI5099] Thomas Webster Like his brother William, settled early in Mass., but evidently remained at or near Hartford for a time. October 28, 1651, Thomas Webster of Parmington sells land there to Capt. John Standley, and again sells land there in 1655 and 1656. In the year 1670 he was of Northampton, MA. Removed to Northfield in 1674, but was driven away by the Indians, and removed to Hadley, MA by 1676. March 27, 1677, Thomas Webster of Hadley, "by reason of an infirmitie in his eye is freed from milatarie trayneings." February 8, 1679, Thomas Webster swore allegiance at Hadley. When however the Indian disturbances of the King Philip war subsided he returned to Northfield where he died. In the Northampton probate records is an inventory of the estate of Thomas Webster of Northfield, filed Oct. 20, 1686. Abigail was then his widow. A second Indian devastation in 1690 rendered his Northfield property valueless for more than twenty years, and his large family of children were brought up among the Alexanders and other relatives, locating in the next few years in Lebanon, Conn., where they became "first settlers." His widow died prior to 1690.
[NI5092] Settled in Hadley, MA.
