[NI160]
In his will dated 3 Sep 1620 and proved 12 Apr 1621, Jeremy Osborn, of Ashford, tanner, left 20 shillings to the poor of Ashford. To his son Joseph, he left his "Turky carpett," and to his son Richard, his "silver cupp and two silver spoones with knobs." To his son, Thomas, he left "seaven silver spoons" and his "Tanning vessels, etc." And he adds, "The residue of my household stuff to be divided between my said sons, with proviso that Cunstance my wife have so much of my plate and household stuff as she shall think fit for her life. Also to my wife, all the money she had inn her keeping. The residue of my goods and chattels to my son Joseph." The executor was his son, Joseph. The overseers were John Walleis and Jeremy's uncle, Robert Hunt.
tance, for life. To his son, Joseph, he bequeathed "a messuage," and "lands and tenements sometime Robert Mellows." To son, Thomas, he left "the tan house for five years, paying rent for 20 shillings a year therefore to Joseph and allowing him a convenient way to the malthouse and river." To son, Richard, he left specified lands in the parishes of St. Dunstans (Canterbury), Eberry, Willesborough, and Ashford "late Richard Haldens."
[NI148]
There was another Thomas Osborn, the son of John and Thomasin Osborn, who was also born at Ashford in 1594-5, and baptised there on 4 Apr 1594/95. It is possible, but unlikely, that he, and not the son of Jeremy, was the American settler. However, circumstantial evidence favors Jeremy's son. We know from Jeremy's will that his son Thomas was a tanner. The name of Thomas's first son was Thomas, for himself, the next, Jeremy, for his father, the next, Richard, for his brother, the next, John, perhaps for his uncle, the next Stephen, a favorite Puritan name, and Joseph, for his brother. If Thomas was, instead, the son of John, then he waited until his fourth son to name one for his father.
rd records. Brother Richard Osborn in his 1646 will names his own children and those of his other brother Joseph, but makes no mention of Thomas or his children, probably because they had removed to America.
. They and the entire New Haven Colony stayed in Boston until the spring of 1638 when they continued on to the area where they founded the town of New Haven, Connecticut. The entire trip is described in the book "The colony of New Haven" by Edward E. Atwater. The book describes life in England at the time, why they wanted to come to American, the trip aboard ship, and the way the land in New Haven was divided up.
892) tells that the party of fifty men and another 200 women and children were part of the company of the Reverend John Davenport arriving on the Hector and her consort. The company was composed of men of wealth, education and influence. Almost immediately upon arrival there was civil and religious conflict with the current residents of Massachusetts. In the spring of 1638 the company moved on to settle the colony of New Haven.
) indicates that Planter Thomas Osborn was responsible for six persons and had an estate valued at 300 pounds. Richard Osborn was responsible for three persons and had an estate valued at 10 pounds. About 1639 he moved to New Haven, CT. He was an early but not original signer of the Covenant at New Haven. He was the Colony tanner in 1643. He moved to East Hampton, NY by 1651. In 1660 he deeded his house and tanyard in New Haven to his son Jeremiah Osborn, tanner, of New Haven. In 1677 Thomas gave his house and home lot in East Hampton to his son Benjamin. He probably lived with this son until his death. Of his children, the first six were baptised at Christ Church in Ashford Parish, Co. Kent, England, the last three in New Haven, CT. He died after 1677, when his will is dated, and before 1686, when his son Thomas is called Senior. It is possible that Thomas died during a visit to New Haven rather than at his home in East Hampton.
[NI163] Richard's will was dated 20 Aug 1646, and was probated 17 Feb 1646/47 to Joseph Osborne, brother of testator. To daughter Rebecca he gave 100 pounds. To Anne, wife of Moses Moyseley, 5 pounds. To Jeremie Osborne and Thomas Osborne, sons of my brother Joseph Osborne, 5 pounds each. To the residue of Joseph Osborne's children, 10 shillings apiece "when they attain years." To the poor of Ashford, 20 shillings. To cousin Constant, wife of George Jarman, 10 shillings. To son James Osborne, specified lands and tenements, with remainder (if he died within age) to cousin Jeremie, son of brother Joseph, "except for the tenement I now dwell in in Ashford, which shall be equally divided between my two daughters Rebecca and Sarah." To daughter Sarah, 12 acres of land in Willsborough, to have at age 20. Movable goods to be sold for the benefit of daughter Rebecca. Executors were brothers Vincent Benskinne of Willnesborough, gent., and Joseph Osborne of Ashford. Witnesses were Nathaniel Sharpey and John Dennis.

[NI5133] William Homes was born in Northern Ireland, and when a young man came to Martha's Vineyard, where he taught school for three years, 1686-1689. He returned to Ireland, where in 1692 he was ordained over the parish of Strabane, and he married the next year. He continued as pastor of this church until 1714/1715, when with his wife and nine children he crossed the ocean and made his future home in Chilmark, where he was ordained pastor 15 Sep 1715. He was pastor there until he died. He was the author of five printed volumes, three of them published during his life, and the two after his death were on "Family Prayer" and "Family Government." He preferred and recommended moderate Presbyterianism to the evils which he thought he saw in the Congregationalism by which he was surrounded. His name does not often appear on the records of New England ecclesiastical history for this reason, and also on account of his not being a graduate of Yale or Harvard, and his duties being discharged on a secluded island. He died at the age of 83. He was preaching in his pulpit and fell down suddenly in a fit, and gradually declined to his death. A slate stone in the graveyard of Chilmark marks his burial place. It bears the following inscription: "In memory of the Reverend learned eminently prudent and pious Mr William Homes late pastor of the Church of Christ in Chilmark who departed this life June 27, 1756 in ye 84th year of his age". His wife, Katherine, lies by his side.
[10361] Scots Presbyterian Minister
[NI5134] A slate stone in the graveyard of Chilmark marks her burial place. It bears the following inscription: "Here lies buried the body of Katherine Homes the very pious relict of the Reverend William Homes late deceased who departed this life to a better. April ye 10th 1754 in ye 82nd year of her age".
[NI5135] Mariner. Resident of Chilmark. Moved to Boston where he married.t son, Capt. Robert Holmes, a sea captain who married Mary Franklin, Benjamin Franklin's sister. However, in the History of Martha's Vinyard, Vol. 2, by Charles Edward Banks, M.D., published by the Dukes County Historical Society, page 48 in the Annals of Chilmark, under the heading Ministry of William Homes, the author states [concerning William Homes]: "While there [in Ireland] he married, Sept. 26, 1693, Katherine, daughter of Rev. Robert Craighead, who had been minister of Donoughmore, and who translated to Derry in the beginning of the year 1690, and continued there until his death, Aug 22, 1711. In the adjoining parish of Urney another William Holmes was ordained in 1696, and this led to a confusion of identity." ay not have been the son of Katherine (Craighead) Homes. In Benjamin Franklin's autobiography, and in the Biography of Benjamin Franklin by M. L. Weems, published by Uriah Hunt in Philadelphia in 1835, and in all other known biographies of Benjamin Franklin, Capt. Robert Holmes (with the "l") is acknowledged to be Franklin's brother-in-law, but the name Craighead is not mentioned and the History of Martha's Vinyard casts doubt as to whether the Capt. was a son of Katherine and Rev. Homes.
