The Illness No One Talks About

It deeply saddens, amazes and disturbs me with the attitude and ignorance of the general public when it comes to mental health issues.  I have to put it down to "ignorance" as I don't believe people in general would be so cruel, intolerant and make fun of any individual with a mental health issue -- if they only knew what that person was going through or attempted to walk a mile in that persons shoes...

The labels and stigmas associated to mental health patients are absolutely alarming and one would never know we were beginning a new millennium.

How can I be so harsh and appear so uncaring about the general public -- you see, I know of what I'm speaking -- I am a person with mental health problems.

My story has been a long time coming and if even one person learns from it than I will feel as if I've struggled through this for a reason.  Hopefully I will have educated someone to the point of taking the time to learn that we are all the same, we're "human beings".  A person with mental health problems is not contagious, nor are we necessarily people who cope poorly.  It doesn't help to be told constantly "Just snap out of it" or "Smile".  You see, we're going through our own personal Hell -- one in which I hope you never have to enter.   We are not "attention seekers" all we are looking for is a small amount of compassion - you don't even have to like us.

A person generally takes for granted waking up in the morning and following through on plans they have made for the day.  A person with mental health issues has to break a day down into very small time frames as they never know how they'll be from one second to the next.  One may remain in this constant state for months or years or it may fluctuate frequently throughout a week, day, hour or even down to a minute.  We may appear to function "normally" (whatever NORMAL is) at one moment and be totally overwhelmed the next for no apparent reason.

In future writings, I intend on talking about my experiences both through personal life and employment.  I would also like to discuss the issues of anxiety, stress, panic attacks, mood swings (Bi-Polar/Manic Depression) and post traumatic stress.  All have been presented to me in one way or another since becoming a mental health "patient" and I am hoping to provide useful links on these topics.

I haved joined numerous webrings.  The sites within these rings will provide you with much more information on this topic.  I will update as frequently as possible, however, as this subject is very personal and very hard for me to talk about, the updates may not be as frequent as you (the viewer) would like.
