Hannah's Birth Story

March 3, 2000 - 39 weeks

I turned up at my doctor's appointment and asked nicely if he could please bring this baby on so I could start to feel like a normal human being again!! He seemed to think I have no patience with being pregnant - damn right!!! I felt so big and cumbersome and grumpy that I was sure Michael was going to lock me up away from everybody!! Hehe
So the doctor and I decided that March 6 was a pretty good birthdate for this baby! Thank Goodness!!

March 6, 2000 - Baby's Birth Day!

Sunday night, March 5, we dropped Thomas and Ebony off at their grandparent's to sleep and go to school the next morning from there. We turned up at the hospital on Monday morning at 7am after a surprisingly good night's sleep - maybe the relief of soon being rid of my bump!!
I was admitted and at 7.40am had the drip put in and my waters broken. The doctor didn't seem to think he'd broken the membrane very much and I didn't feel much fluid till later during contractions.
Michael and I sat down to a couple of games of "UNO" and then I found I couldn't concentrate because the contractions started. I would describe contractions brought on by the drip as very effective. They are strong and short and I felt great breathing through them while leaning over a bright green beanbag - I know the colour's not important but it was something I noticed! The midwife was an angel - she kept encouraging me and let me do whatever I felt helped!
About 10am I decided a shower would be a nice idea so I turned it up nice and hot and used a bar in the shower to lean on during contractions. 10.45 - 10.50am I was having some pretty mean contractions and wanted to use the gas so I dried off - not easy while hooked up to a drip, having contractions, etc.... Michael came in very handy during this time. I prefer contracting on my own so I can concentrate, but once things get close to the actual birth I find Michael to be wonderful support! He knows just when I need a hand to hold!!
The relief from the gas was wonderful - would be great stuff to have at parties!! The doctor came in to check on me at 11am and decided I was ready to go!! I remember feeling really surprised because I thought I'd be contracting through to the afternoon!
After two more contractions with the gas I was ready to push and five minutes later at 11.25am Hannah Grace appeared!! And she looked wonderful!! The doctor and midwife put her on my tummy (before I knew she was a she) and said to have a look and see what I'd had!! I was very excited to find we'd had a girl!! I knew Thomas and Ebony were both hoping for a baby sister!
Photos and all the necessary things were done and we found out that she weighed 4.34 kilos - 9lb 8oz - the exact same weight as Ebony, but 2.5 weeks earlier than Ebony!! Imagine how much she would have weighed if I hadn't gotten sick of being pregnant when I did!!
Michael left a couple hours later after I'd given Hannah her first feed and I was ready to go back to my room. He went to give the grandparents the news and to pick up the new big brother and big sister!
They came to see Hannah for the first time around 4.30pm and helped give her her first bath! They were delighted with their baby sister, but thought the basket of biscuits in my hospital room was also pretty exciting!! Hehe

April 6, 2000 - Hannah, 1 month old already!

Hannah has been doing really well - she is 2 pounds heavier and is getting bigger and bigger all the time. She is now more alert and has lost her 'brand new babyness'. Thomas and Ebony adore her and she has settled into the family with no problems at all!
