DR. BRACKETT was a medical practitioner in the southern part of the United States. He devoted his life to serving the poor and would travel miles on cold nights to visit needy souls.


He fell in love, but his bride-to-be forsook him on his wedding day because he failed to appear - he had gone to save the life of a Mexican child.


When he died there was a large funeral, but the people couldn't agree on a suitable memorial and one was never erected. Two people, however, did not forget... the parents of that Mexican child.


Dr. Brackett's surgery had been over a clothing store, so, being too poor to erect a stone themselves, they took the old brass plate from the entrance to the shop and put it on the grave. It simply said:
