MITZY AND THE RUG
The children can pretend that they are cats, crawling on hands and knees.
Mitzy, a black cat with four white mittens on her feet and a white dot on her nose, was sitting like a statue on a table, staring out a window. Once in a while her tail would Rick back and forth with excitement at spying a bird fly by. She became tired of watching, so she pawed at a bug that was walking on the window glass. She missed and it fell to the floor. Mitzy jumped down and crawled under the table, looking all around for the bug.

She pounced on her favorite toy, an old, bent and chewed pipe cleaner. Standing on her two back legs she threw it up in the air and caught it with her front paws and mouth, chewing on it more. The pipe cleaner fell to the floor again. Mitzy bent down, threw it up with one paw and stretched high to catch it before it hit the floor. Catching the pipe cleaner in her mouth, she pranced into the den and stood on her favorite rug. There she dropped the pipe cleaner and lay on her side, stretching all her legs and toes and her tail, trying to touch the old pipe cleaner. The den was a good room to play in because the floor was slippery and the pipe cleaner would slide across it easily always landing on the throw rug. Mitzy pawed the toy, pushing it around. She crouched low, flicked her tail wildly and jumped on the pipe cleaner.

Suddenly she bent, stretched, jumped, pawed and slid across the floor. The pipe cleaner landed on the rug. Pretending she was a snake, Mitzy crawled across the floor. She landed on the pipe cleaner and in the same moment caught the edge of the rug with her claw. The kitten rolled on the rug, back and forth. Since her claw was snagged, the rug began to move, curling on top of Mitzy. At first Mitzy thought this was neat, because it made a tunnel which she crawled into and back out of, but she could not move very far. Mitzy pulled her claw, moving it around to loosen the hold. Despite her efforts, the rug only curled around her tighter, so she couldn't move. Mitzy was so scared that she cried. That was when I came to her rescue, unwrapping the rug and untangling her claw. Mitzy galloped away to the safe table by the window. She jumped up and sat down to stare at the birds.
