September 11, 2001

Two hijacked commercial planes slammed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center September 11, 2001, causing both 110-story landmarks to collapse in devastating clouds of flames and smoke and killing a 'tremendous number' of people starting their workday inside. The first plane struck the northern tower at about 8:45 a.m., and a second plane hit the southern tower about 15 minutes later.
