Angel Wings

Through my tears, I see
an unadorned hand reaching out.
Through my pain, I feel
the soft touch of a feather.
Then I hear,
in the soft whisp of a whisper.
A voice as I have never heard before,
"Cry not . . . I am here,
I have always been here,
and forever will be here."
I reach out,
and find nothing.
Yet I feel the comfort
of being wrapped in warmth.
I feel the soft touch of a feather,
And I know . . .
I am wrapped in the wings of an Angel.
- Beverlyn Bates

Ministering Angels

Angels of light, spread your bright wings
And keep near me at morn.
Nor in the starry eve, not midnight deep,
Leave me forlorn.
From all dark spirits of unholy power
Guard my weak heart,
Circle around me in each perilous hour,
And take my part.
From all foreboding thoughts and dangerous fears,
Keep me secure.
Teach me to hope, and through the bitterest tears
Still to endur.
If lonely in the road so fair and wide
My feet should stray.
Then through a roughter, safer pathway guide
Me day by day.
Should my heart faint at its unequal strife,
O still be near!
Shadow the perilous sweetness of this life
With holy fear.
Then leave me not alone in this bleak world,
Where'er I roam.
And at the end, with your bright wings unfurled,
O take me home!
- Adelaide A. Proctor

Hidden Wings

How shall we tell an angel
From another guest?
How, from the common worldly herd,
One of the bleast?
Hint of suppressed halo,
Rustle of hidden wings,
Wafture of heavenly frankincense,
Which of these things?
The old Sphinx smiles so subtly,
"I give no golden rule,
Yet I would warn thee,
World - treat well
Whom thou call'st fool.
- Gerturde Hale

Holy Angels Bright

Ye holy angels bright
Who wait at God's right hand,
Or through the realms of light
Fly at your Lord's command,
Assist our song,
Or else the theme
Too high doth seem
For mortal tongue.
- John Hampden Gurney

Angel Tents

There are who, like the Seer of old,
Can see the helpers God hath sent,
And how life's rugged mountain side
Is white with many an angel tent.
They hear the hearlds whom our Lord
Sends down this pathway to prepare,
And light from others hidden shines
On their high place of faith and prayer.
- John Greenleaf Whittier

Listening Angels

When the chant was done, and lingering
Died upon the evening air,
From the hill the radiant Angels
Still were listening there.
Silent came the gathering darkness,
Bringing with it sleep and rest.
Save a little bird was singing
Near her leafy nest.
Through the sounds of war and labor
She had warbled all day long,
While the Angels leant and listened
Only to her song.
But the starry night was coming
When she ceased her little lay,
From the mountaintop the Angels,
Slowly passed away.
- Adelaide A. Proctor

She Folds Her Wings

She doeth little kindnesses
Which most leave undone or despise,
For naught that sets one heart at ease,
And giveth happiness or peace,
Is low-esteemed in her eyes.
She hath no scorn of common things,
And, though she seem of other birth,
Round us her heart entwines and clinge,
And patiently she folds her wings
To tread the humble paths of earth.
- James Russell Lowell

Love and Pity

God called the nearest angels,
Who dwell with Him above,
The tenderest one was Pity,
"Arise," He said, "my angels!"
"A wail of woe and sin,
Steals through the gates of heaven,
And saddens all within."
"My harps take up the mournful strain,
That from a lost world swells,
The smoke of torment clouds the light
and blights the asphodel."
"Fly downward to that under world,
And on its soul of pain
let Love drop smiles like sunshine,
And Pity tears like rain!"
Two faces bowed before the Throne,
Veiled in their golden hair,
Four white wings lessened swiftly
the dark abyss of air.
The way was strange,
The flight was long,
At last the angels came,
Where swung the lost and neither world,
Red-wrapped in rayless flame.
There Pity, shuddering, wept,
But Love, with faith too strong for fear,
Took heart from God's almightiness
and smiled a smile of cheer.
And lo! that tear of Pity,
Quenched the flame whereon it feel,
And, with the sunshine of that smile
hope entered into hell!
Two unveiled faces, full of joy,
Looked upward to the Throne,
Four white wings folded at the feet
of Him who sat thereon!
And deeper than the sound of seas,
More soft than falling flake,
Amidst the hush of wing and song,
The Voice Eternal spoke.
"Welcome, my angels!
Ye have brought a holier joy to heaven,
Henceforth its sweetest song shall be
The song of sin forgiven!"
- John Greenleaf Whittier

The Touch of the Angel's Hand

Life is so generous a giver, but we,
Judging its gifts by their covering,
Cast them away as ugly, or heavy, or hard.
Remove the covering,
And you will find beneath it,
A living splendor, woven of love,
By wisdom, with power.
Welcome it, grasp it, and you touch the
Angel's hand that brings it to you.
Everything we call a trial, a sorrow, or a duty,
Believe me, that Angel's hand is there.
- Fra Giovanni

Angels at Our Side

"From glory unto glory,"
without a shade of care,
Because the Lord who loves us
will every burden bear.
Because we trust Him fully,
and know that He will guide,
And know that blessed Angels
Are watching at our side.
- Francis R. Havergal

Angels Unawares

In the hours of morn and even,
In the noon and night,
Trooping down they come from heaven
In their noiseless flight.
To guide, to guard, to warn, to cheer us,
"Mid our joys and cares,
All unseen are hovering near us
Angels unawares.
When the daylight is declining
In the western skies,
And the stars in heaven are shining
As the twilight dies,
Voices on our hearts come stealling
Like celestial airs,
To our spirit-sense revealing
Angels unawares.
- J.F. Waller

I Have Met an Angel

I have me an Angel,
She's been grounded from the skin,
I hold her in my arms,
I will never know why.
I have met an Angel,
All the shades of white,
Bringing out her beauty,
She's ready to take flight.
I have met an angel,
She's right here beside me,
Wrapped warmly in my arms,
Could she be able to see.
I have met an Angel,
I love her with all my heart,
Now that we are together,
I never want to part.
- Sebastian Issawi

Why Angels Have Come

Angels have come to bring with them,
In thought and deed and, also, hymn
The message of God and His wisdom great
His love, His wants for all our fate.
They bring on high their protection strong
To guide us all when things go wrong
To teach us patience when none exists
To help us see what blindness missed
To help us hear what deafness hides
To help us feel what touch denies
To give us peace when fightings 'round
To fill us with love when hates abound
To encourage the feeling of a want to give
A feeling with which we all should live.
So in this season's darkest night
Within our souls doth shine a light
To warm us with forgiveness and sharing
And with compassion and, also, caring.
All these are sent from heaven divine
For the Angels have brought them,
'Tis God's Design.
