The Computer as a Center!
By all means, USE your classroom computer as a center! Here are
some things I do with computers:
- Assign a certain program on the computer. We have one VERY old Apple
IIc computer (Cecil, shown in the photo) There are some very nice
programs that can be done on this old guy: he's one of my most popular
machines, in spite of his small green and black screen!
- Our parish has a guided tour of the church on the church website.
This is an EXCELLENT activity to do during workshop. I simply bookmark
the site and show the students how to open it. A bookmarked site, with
a specific activity, is an ideal way to use the internet in the classroom.
I hope to have a listing of good sites added to this center page this summer!
- If you don't have a lot of programs, you can make up your own activities.
Open up a spreadsheet, and put math problems on it. Save several copies,
then let the kids use them as a center. Good practice, and you can easily
"grade" the work!
- Another easily made computer center activity is proofreading. Write a
short paragraph, with ten mistakes. Have students correct the mistakes.
(If you have a program such as DOL, it is great to just do this on the computer!)
