2. Objective: Students will recognize the value of coins.
3. Materials required: Number grids: showing 25 for the quarter game, showing 100 for the dollar game. 1 1/2" wooden cube, with coins taped on using packaging tape. Quarter game has 1 nickel and 5 pennies on the faces. Dollar game has one quarter, one dime, two nickels, and two pennies.
4. Resources: Adapted from "Spin 25 Cents," found in Box It and Bag It Mathematics by Donna Burke.
5. Teacher Directions: Copy the number grids. Make the dice as directed.
6. Student Directions: (Usually this is introduced as a group activity early in the year. The concept is simple, but the directions are a little too long for beginners to read!)
Take a number grid. Roll the die. Color in the number of cents that the coin is worth. For you next turn, SWITCH COLORS. Roll again. Color in the number of cents that coin is worth. Keep going until you fill the grid exactly. If you have only three spaces left, remember, you can't color if you roll a nickel. You need to roll three more pennies!
7. Patterns: grid patterns are on the next page. I just noticed that I scanned the wrong sheet for "Roll a Dollar." I'm not going to rescan. I'll put up a PDF file with the correct graphs: Roll a Dollar
