1. Title of Center/ Activity:   Tasty Syllables

2. Objective: Students will decode three-syllable words.

3. Materials required: Word syllables, written on oaktag. First syllables have an irregular right edge. Middle syllables are irregular on right and left. Final syllables are irregular on the right edge (as shown in the picture).

4. Resources: Adapted from a worksheet found in GA 254: Wonderful Word Games, by Mary & David Dunning .

5. Teacher Directions: Use the word list provided on page 28 to make a set of words, broken into syllables as shown. Introduce the decoding of three syllable words by passing out the cards, and having students do group word-building. A pocket chart is nice for this, but not necessary.

6. Student Directions: (if used as an individual activity, rather than a group) There are fifteen three-syllable words mixed up in this box. The rough edges give you a clue for beginning, middle, or end syllables, but the edges do NOT match like puzzle pieces. Build the words, and write them on your answer sheets.

7. WORD LIST: hamburger, cucumber, casserole, mayonaise, vanilla, strawberry, barbecue, sandwiches, beverage, broccoli, chocolate, spaghetti, potato, pineapple
