Mendez Town, Cavite Province, Region IV, Philippines

Mendez was originally a sitio within the municipality of Indang. Its name then was Gahitan from the word "gahit," which means "to cut." It was an old custom in the locality to cut the abundant cogon and talkahib that grew in and around the site so as to avoid the risk of fire burning the houses with cogon roofing.

In 1987, during the Spanish regime, barrio gahitan was named Mendez-Nuņez, named after the Spanish official who taught the inhabitants how to read and write. In 1903, Mendez-Nuņez was separated from Indang and was made a district of the municipality of Alfonso. Twelve years later, in 1919, Mendez-Nuņez became an independent municipality.
