July 14-15 Nijmegen, Netherlands

We decided to break up our trip to Berlin by stopping in to visit one of Kelly's friends in the eastern part of Holland. She had met Filiep a year ago at an educational conference in Switzerland, and kept in contact with him.

Filiep is an interesting person, especially to an American. He isn't quite the "unibomber" but he is somewhat anti-technology. And he sculpts in his free time. In fact, after looking at how little we have for this page we decided to feature him on our People page (coming soon) instead.

We tried green herring and landsgrune cheese, both specialties from that region of Holland. And we drank Grolsch beer, mandatory when in that part of the country. We bicycled outside of Nijmegen to the country to where his friend's houseboat was, and crossed the current in a dinghy to get to a private beach for a quick swim.

We had hoped to spend a couple of days with Filiep--there was an annual festival going on in Nijmegen that weekend too. But we realized we had to keep moving east in order to get to our volunteer workcamp on time.
