Discovered in 1503 by Christopher Columbus. He named the Islands "Las Tortugas" 
("The Turtles"). For years afterwards the islands remained uninhabited, visited only by passing ships or pirates seeking to hide their treasure. The first settlers in the islands were deserters from the British navy, stationed in Jamaica.


Cayman Brac, commonly referred to simply as the Brac, has a total land area of 14 
square miles (approx. 1 mile wide by 14 miles long) with a distinguishing cliff, or bluff 
("Brac" is Gaelic for "Bluff") running through the center.


This bluff starts at sea level on the west end of the island, and rises to about 140
feet at the eastern tip of the island. Cayman Brac is a British Colony and everybody
speaks English. And don't forget! They drive on the left side of the road!If you like you
can rent a 40 minute cassette audio tape which allows visitors to follow a self guided 
driving tour of the Brac. The people are very friendly and they enjoy visitors.

On your sightseeing trip you will see beautiful spots, there are picnic area's on the island.

The museum in Stake Bay offers a peek into the Bracker's history that should not be missed.


Caves
During the tragic Hurricane of 1932 
and other storms, Brackers took refuge
in the caves in the bluff.


The Bluff.
The Bluff itself, for its dramatic views, contrasting environments; mysterious caves,
and variety of vegetation and bird life that comprise the expanse of plateau atop is 
the attraction of Cayman Brac.
Or just doing nothing.
The pace on Cayman Brac is slow, so just sit back and relax.

locations,many of which can be 
reached without a boat.





A living coral reef rings the island. Cayman Brac is known for virgin patch reefs, numerous spur and groove reefs, and sand chutes cascading over endless drop- offs. There is a steep wall on thesouth coast and shallow elk horn coral gardens off the southwest shore.


The north coast has deep reef crests which lie 45-50 feet below the surface, 
shallow sandy valleys perpendicular to shore, and a wall that plunges to 
unimaginable depths.


Almost every hotel has its own dive shop where you can sign up for a trip 
or just rent what you need.


If you can't dive there are schools where you can get your PADI certificate. 
Most dive schools offer NAUI and/or PADI Open Water certificate. 
PADI Open Water takes about 5 to 7 days before you are certified to dive.
