The guidebook was right! The pace of life in
Cordoba was a lot different than Seville. It was a small, quiet town with one major
attraction, a few interesting things to see, and lots of character (yes, we're
simplifying). It was a nice little side trip.
It had now been nearly 3 weeks into our trip
and we had still only seen the one cathedral in Seville. Since we didn't want to get burnt
out too early, so we almost held back--but decided the famous "church" of
Cordoba wouldn't really count as it was actually a mosque with a cathedral built
inside it. And the only one of it's kind to boot.
So we headed to the Mezquita Catedral y Tesoro.
The fact that the combination of the two buildings worked aesthetically was about as
amazing as the concept itself.
The other "must see" in Cordoba was
an ancient Roman bridge, the Torre de la Calahorra, so of course we crossed over and back.
Our evenings were definitely more peaceful than
Seville too. We stumbled upon a great hostel for $20 a night and were serenaded to sleep
each evening by the owner's son practicing his classical guitar for a bit each evening
outside our door.
After a couple of blissfully quiet days we were
ready to head east to Granada.
