"The Great Ocean Road"

The very scenic "Great Ocean road", runs for some 300km from just outside Gelong through to Warrambool on the south coast of Aus in Victoria.
A drive along here will provide you some of the most beautiful scenery in Australia.
For most of the 300km, the road hugs the coast line thus giving a spectacular ride for the passgengers, but not reccomended for the driver as the road certainly needs to be driven with care.
The Twelve Apostles
Along the route, you'll find many stopping places to take a look, many private and secluded beaches, if you want to find somewhere private, well there is enough room for everyone.
Along the Great Ocean Road are whats called "The Tweleve Apostles" These are large lumps of land scattered into the sea, sadly no longer only about 9 remain and are getting smaller all the time.
The Great Ocean Road was built in 1932 as a works project during the depression, and stetches of the country through which it runs are still very untouched.
The Coast is well equipped with camping and caravan sites along with many of the towns pubs having B&B available. We stayed in caravan site in Peterbrough and rented a log cabin for the night at a reasonable $40 for the night.
If relaxing on any one of the secluded beaches dosn't take your fancy, you can always head inland to the bushwalks, wildlife, scenery, waterfalls and lookouts of the Otway Ranges.
Getting There
From Melboure, there are many coach trips that can take you down the Great Ocean Road, however, We reccommend, if there is more that one of you, get yourself into the city and hire a car for a couple of days.
The problem with the tours, is having very limited time at stops, barly time for a photo or a cigarette before you are put back on the bus for the nest part of the trip. Ideally take 2 or 3 days, roam around at your own pace and you'll appeciate so much more what this wonderful part of Australia has to offer.
