The Gipsland lakes, located about 300km north east of Melbnourne, is the largest inlet water system in Australia. The 3 main lakes, King, Victoria and Wellingtonare al ljoined and fed by a number of riverswhich originate in the high country. The lakes are actually shallow coastal lagoons seperated from the oceans by long strech of sand known as the ninety mile beach.

From the Lakes entrnce you can gain access to Raymond Island. Here is a fascinating place you can drive round and see bush life with collonies of Kowala bears and wallabies on offer to see in theri natual habitat. You catch the car ferry across, its cheap and takes about 5 mins to cross, but make sure you dont miss the last one back otherwise you'll be spending sharing your evening with the creatures of the night!
