Victoria (The Garden State) covers only a very small part of the country yet still covers some 228,000 sq km
and has a population of around 4.5 million people, most of which live in the capital city Melbourne.
It was back in 1835 when the first European settlers decided to take root in Melbourne after previous visits from explorers from Sydney were ignored in favor of Tasmania.
The Settlers here wanted to form a breakaway colony and were not interested in the convicts system, often infact were convict ships turned back from Sydney.
So much was their desire to be seperate from NSW, they named the land after the queen and the capital city after Lord Melbourne, finally in 1851, the colony was seperated from NSW and was then born as VICTORIA
Away from the City
Of course Victoria is much more than its capital city, there are many many extreamly beautiful sights to see and all accessable by bus or train from the city.
