Brisbaine
When Sydney and the colony of NSW needed a better place to stores its more notorious cons, the tropical land to the north seemed a good place to drop them.
In1824, a penal settlement was established at Redcliffe on Moreton Bay but it didn't last very long, mainly due to the lack of fresh water and the presence of hostile aboriginals.
The settlement was then moved south and inland to Brisbaine. The penal settle ment awas eventually abandoned in 1839 but by 1842 Brisbaines status as a major city was assurred when the area was thrown open to free settlers.
Settlers form all over the world came to reside in Brisbaine and all year round warm climate appeals to many although it does get very sticky in mid summer.
Brisbaine itself is slightly inlnad from the coast line, unlike the majority of the Austrlia cities and thus the beach life has to be found outside the city itslef....or so it seemed until I cam across this artificial beach in the city!
The Gold Coast & Surfers Paradise
The Gold coast in Queenslands holiday area. Picture the costa del sol and put it down under and you wont be too far off. Many people love it but just as many people hate it and to be hnest the light of high rise appertment blocks at the waters edge is something that most of the backpacker crowd avoid.
If you like bright lights in a big city then this is for you, there is heaps to do and see and alwasy somewhere open selling beer. in mid summer, the holiday makers flock here and it can become very busy indeed. Apart from the huge numbers of hotels, the Gold coast does also cater for the backpacker.
About a km south of the centre of Surfers Paradise is the 5* of backpacking resorts. "Surfers Paradise Backpackers resort" Has good cleans facilities, pool and gym and has a good social life as well.
